During World War II, nearly 50,000 acres in Clark County were acquired from the U.S. Department of Interior to establish a moving target machine gun range, which was used to train aerial gunners. Ivan Dmitri took the aerial photos during an assignment for LIFE magazine about the Army Air Corps Gunnery School. These photos are facing west, north of highway 215, south of the mountain range.

After WWII, the Gunnery School was reorganized and renamed several times, eventually becoming Nellis AFB.

Nellis Small Arms Range Annex. This site, still visible from above in the 2020s, is Nellis Small Arms Range Annex Formerly Used Defense Site.
