Having Ivan’s comments during this angst party is lifting my spirit
I don’t have a lot to say about this episode, so I’m probably just going to watch Episode 8 immediately after this one and not write a proper review, because word vomit is pointless.
But just in case the final 5 minutes don’t give me more to say about Episode 7, I’ll say two things:
1. I love this reunion, even moreso because I was annoyed earlier that he didn’t eat the cookies. The huge grin on both Ivan and Mina’s faces make it all the more heartwarming.
2. Have I mentioned that I love Tyrone and Tandy? Because I love Tyrone and Tandy.
It wasn’t intentional, but I’m now noticing that when she looks at him in these photos he isn’t looking at her, and when he looks at her she isn’t looking at him. That means absolutely nothing in terms of analysis. I’m just a silly “shipper”.
It appears that my earlier post had some prescient to it, as we saw Tyrone being “hopeful” again, in a sense, by refusing to give up on Tandy. Also, he sees her as his friend! Usually those words would crush a shipper, but in this case it doesn’t mean “friendzone” (I hate this word but it is what it is), it’s actually a big step forward considering the fact that she started this season by stealing his wallet.
If I ever make a list of what I ship in different TV series, Tandy and Tyrone will be among the top 3. (On that note, Hot Bob and Other Bob from Insatiable are probably top 3 as well, surprising no one who reads this blog.)
Potential antagonists for Cloak and Dagger
Brigid “Mayhem” O’Reilly
The original title of this post was “Potential villains...”, but the word villain doesn’t really fit O’Reilly. From what I understand in the comics, she is more like a supernatural Frank Castle. I imagine her arc in season 2 will be much like Frank’s arc in season 2 of Daredevil, a clash of ideals rather than goals. Her power-set is exuding a toxic gas, so the VFX team will probably just take Cloak’s effects and make it green.
Mister Negative/Ivan Hess
In the comics, Mister Negative got his powers from the same source that Cloak and Dagger did, only he has powers from both the darkforce and the lightforce. Gaining powers also gave him dissociative identity disorder, so Mister Negative is the villainous alter ego of the kind-hearted Martin Li. Other people in the fandom have already said that they might adapt this villain to be the alter ego of Ivan Hess, and I think that is a fantastic idea. Fun things about Mister Negative: he has switched Cloak and Dagger’s powers (which would make for a very entertaining episode), and he sometimes clashes with other villains, which could lead to a Villain/Hero team-up, aka one of my favorite tropes.
Lord of Light/Nathan Bowen
In the comics Nathan Bowen doesn’t die, he divorces his wife, leaves his family, goes to India, and uses his light powers to become a cult leader. Honestly, Nathan coming back to life and becoming an evil Messianic figure is too good of an opportunity to pass up. Please do this showrunners.
Mister Jip
This character has already shown up in that one guy’s fear in episode 6. Mister Jip was the first student of the Ancient One, and the first student to go rogue. He possesses the bodies of the evil to prolong his life (Peter Scarborough seems like a good candidate). The only problem is that the bodies start to decay after this happens. The consequence is that Mister Jip looks like a misshapen monster. He has two lackeys, Night and Day, that have similar powers to Cloak and Dagger. His goal is to possess Cloak, and when that fails, seek revenge.
Roxxon
I doubt this company will stop being evil anytime soon.
Maggia
They are the first villains Cloak and Dagger faced in the comics. Interestingly, their only appearance in the MCU so far is in Agent Carter season 2. They were gangsters that helped Whitney Frost acquire more Darkforce. So there is built in history the show can pull from as well as the comics stuff.
Street-level Criminals
Cloak and Dagger are known in the comics for fighting primarily ordinary criminals rather than costumed super-villains, Cloak and Dagger were originally created to fight the war on drugs. Ironically, I can see the show going in the opposite direction now that Netflix is known for street-level crime fighting. Although they certainly didn’t stray from real life villains in season 1.
Heroes and Villains of other shows
Cloak and Dagger are also known in the comics for being go-to guest star cameos. The show has already proven that they are not afraid to do shout outs to the other parts of the MCU, and I hope that continues. It is unlikely that the movies will acknowledge the tv shows until after they get cancelled, if then. The least the tv universe can do is stick together.
I also wonder if Tandy’s confrontation with Scarborough will have any ramifications for Mina or Ivan Hess, since Tandy gave Scarborough the evidence in exchange for the hush money. Ivan signed that memo Tandy showed him, and that could lead to some messy consequences for him, or even Mina, as she is currently still employed by Roxxon. Hell, there could even be consequences for Adina Johnson, because Tandy used her ID badge to access the Roxxon Gulf building. I’m sure they have access logs for who enters the building, so if they look at those, it could mean Adina could land in some very deep shit. Of course, Tandy took the hush money, so Scarborough might think he no longer has a problem on his hands. But, as we know, there are two episodes left in the season, which means Tandy could still seek revenge on Roxxon and Scarborough... That could set up a lot for a second season, as well.

“What did the stag say to the doe? See? I told you so!”
What do you think the chances are of Ivan Hess becoming the MCU's Mister Negative?
I kind of love this idea, but I don’t know if it will work out in terms of contracts.
Mister Negative, for anyone reading this who isn’t familiar with the character, has only been in comics for about a decade. His alias is Martin Li. He’s from China and came to the US illegally as the only survivor of a ship, but much of his backstory is actually fake, so comic book readers don’t actually know his real name. He’s a villain who can draw from both Darkforce and Lightforce to make himself look like a photographic negative and he has a bunch of abilities as a result of getting both ends of the powerups that Cloak and Dagger get. He was given the same experimental drug they were.
Martin Li doesn’t actually know that he’s Mister Negative and believes his own fake backstory. It’s kind of a question of whether or not it’s an effect of the power or whether he has dissociative identity disorder.
So, I love this idea for a lot of reasons. It wouldn’t be the first time an MCU property (Agents of SHIELD) called a character an original one created for the show (Skye) and later revealed a comic book origin story (Daisy Johnson AKA Quake). There are a lot of commonalities between Ivan Hess and Martin Li: both do gooders who want to make a difference in the world, both sole survivors of a shady event happening on the water, both being associated with Darkforce, both possibly getting their origin story from the same point as Cloak and Dagger… I also think it’s unlikely that Ivan Hess survived what happened on that rig with only a case of catatonia for eight years. Look at O’Reilly. One quick blast from a valve after taking a few gunshots, and she’s ready to be Mayhem. I also like the idea that the same few minutes leading up to the explosion playing over and over in his catatonic state were significant and that there were things he blocked from his memory.
Like I said, I kind of love this theory.
That being said… who knows if they would be able to use him in the MCU? He could be a character that falls under the Spider-Man umbrella, just because that’s where he started, which would mean Sony would get first crack at him if they wanted him. Having said that, Kingpin is also mostly associated with Spider-Man, but Marvel brought him into the Netflix universe, so I have hope!
I don’t know if I’d want the writers to go the dissociative identity route just because Agents of SHIELD did that recently and it didn’t go over well with some fans. But I very much like the idea of Ivan Hess becoming Mister Negative down the line. I think if the writers aren’t planning on doing their version of Mister Negative with him, it’ll be a missed opportunity.
