The Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich, heir apparent to the throne, was killed by his father during an argument. The Tsar beat Ivan's pregnant wife, Yelena Sheremeteva, for wearing what he considered to be immodest clothing, and Ivan defended her. Yelena suffered a miscarriage as a result, and the next day, Ivan and his father continued to argue over military issues, with the tsar accusing Ivan of inciting rebellion. The tsar struck his son on the head with his sceptre, and Boris Godunov tried to intervene, but was attacked as well. Ivan collapsed from the blow, and the tsar, realizing what he had done, was immediately remorseful, but it was too late. Ivan Ivanovich died three days later, leaving his younger brother Fyodor as the heir apparent.
