A senior Russian general in command of forces in occupied southern Ukraine says he was suddenly dismissed from his post after accusing Mosco
Th Russian military has been in a greater state of turmoil than it usually is.
A senior Russian general in command of forces in occupied southern Ukraine says he was suddenly dismissed from his post after accusing Moscow’s Defense Ministry leadership of betraying his troops by not providing sufficient support. Gen. Ivan Popov was the commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army, which has been engaged in heavy fighting in the Zaporizhzhia region. He is one of the most senior officers to have taken part in the bloody Russian campaign in Ukraine. Popov said he had raised questions about “the lack of counter-battery combat, the absence of artillery reconnaissance stations and the mass deaths and injuries of our brothers from enemy artillery,” in a voice note published on Telegram late Wednesday.
In military terms, Russia can't even cope with the basics. Gen. Popov blames Putin crony Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu “signed the order and got rid of me,” the general also said in the recording, as he accused the top Kremlin official of treason. “As many commanders of divisional regiments said today, the servicemen of the armed forces of Ukraine could not break through our army from the front, (but) our senior commander hit us from the rear, treacherously and vilely decapitating the army at the most difficult and tense moment,” Popov said.
Russian senior officers have been taking it on the chin lately.
Another Russian General Killed in Occupied Ukraine
Russian Lieutenant General Oleg Yuryevich Tsokov was reportedly killed in an overnight attack by Ukrainian forces in the city of Berdyansk. The information was confirmed on the Telegram channel of the mayor of Mariupol, Peter Andryushchenko, and then by an advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko, on Twitter. Later Andryushchenko suggested that this had been an attack against the “Duna Hotel” which had been commandeered as accommodation for the Russian military leadership in the occupied town. According to local reports, cited by the mayor, the hotel was all but completely destroyed in spite of reports that anti-missile defenses were sited close to the building. Unconfirmed reports say the building may have been struck by a Storm Shadow missile.
Cheers to the UK for supplying Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles! 🍻🇬🇧
Russian commander killed while jogging may have been tracked on Strava app
A Russian submarine commander shot to death while jogging on Monday may have been targeted by an assailant tracking him on a popular running app, according to Russian media. Stanislav Rzhitsky was killed earlier this week in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar by an “unknown person,” state news agency TASS reported, adding that “the motive for the crime is being investigated.” [ ... ] Russian media earlier reported that Rzhitsky’s killer may have used Strava, a widely available app used by runners and cyclists, to follow his movements.
Yes, this is yet another idiotic lapse in basic security by Russians. Rzhitsky was essentially broadcasting to the world his exact location with an exercise app.
Top Russian General Missing Since Mutiny Is ‘Currently Resting,’ Lawmaker Says
Russian General Sergei Surovikin, the deputy commander of Russia’s war in Ukraine—who is also known to have ties with Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin—is “currently resting” and “not available for now,” said a lawmaker from Russia’s ruling party. The comment came in response to questions Wednesday about Surovikin’s whereabouts. Surovikin, who is known in the Russian media as “General Armageddon” due to the tactics he used in the bloody Syrian civil war, is one of several notable Russian military leaders who have not been seen in public since Wagner’s aborted mutiny last month.
Of course the place where "General Armageddon" is resting could very well be a gulag.
While regular press freedom no longer exists in Russia, there is still a rather robust exchange of information on Telegram. This news of chaos and incompetence among the top military leadership will gradually filter through much of the population – including the cannon fodder at the front.

What surprises me about the conversation around Goncharov (1973) is that NO ONE is talking about the twins? More under cut:
Ivan and Galina are two perfect mirror reactions to tragedy. After the attack, Galina seeks to move on with her life. She joins Goncharov not for revenge, but to make enough money to live in luxury for the rest of her life. She, in a way, finds a healthy outlet for moving on and dealing with her anger (although it is the mafia, so, do with that what you will). Meanwhile, Ivan locks himself in his apartment and will not open the doors to anyone, especially Galina. He refuses to wear white because that’s what he was wearing when the tragedy occurred. He writes poem after poem about his grief, a much healthier outlet than crime, but it doesn’t work because he’s not actually trying to move on. He’s attempting to talk to someone about his problems without actually speaking to anyone, because a real person would respond to him and force him to change. He resents Galina for moving on.
At the end of the film, Ivan is gunned down in his apartment, while Galina gets her mansion and is able to live the rest of her life in peace. This is interesting, because normally in set ups like this, the person involved in the mafia is the one who dies, not the one doing everything they can to avoid it, but Goncharov says, no. Letting your past consume you is even deadlier than crime. Your sanctuary is not actually safe. You have to live in order to escape. It’s also nice to see a plot like this that isn’t set up as angry evil crime vs. calm, peaceful meditation, because the world is far more complicated than that. People who do terrible things can be in a better state than people who technically do nothing wrong. Ivan didn’t commit any crimes, but he was worse off than Galina because he didn’t do any good, either. Galina did do good, as well as evil. Goncharov says that doing things that might be wrong is better than doing nothing at all, and honestly? That’s a really unique and important message for a film, especially one made in 1973.

Russian court jails former general who criticised top brass for 5 years on fraud charges
MOSCOW, April 24 (Reuters) - A former Russian commander who criticised Moscow's military leadership in Ukraine was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday after a military court found him guilty of large-scale fraud, Russian news agencies reported.
Ivan Popov, a former major general who led Russia's 58th army and who fought in Chechnya and later commanded Russian units in southern Ukraine, was found guilty of stealing more than 130 million roubles ($1.56 million) of metal products intended for building fortifications along the Ukrainian frontline.
Popov's lawyer told the RIA news agency he would appeal the verdict. Popov was quoted by the Kommersant newspaper last month as complaining about his "unjustified prosecution."
The former military man was tried alongside a businessman, Sergei Moiseyev. Another suspected accomplice, Lieutenant General Oleg Tsokov, was killed in Ukraine in 2023.
Several top defence ministry officials have faced criminal charges as part of a sweeping anti-corruption probe that has shaken up the Russian military establishment over the past year, but Popov and his supporters say his case was different and that he was being punished for speaking out.
Following a failed mutiny in June 2023 by Wagner mercenaries against Russia's defence establishment, Popov's concerns about how Moscow was waging its war in Ukraine were made public in a voice message which was released by a Russian lawmaker that July.
In it, he was heard complaining about the deaths of Russian soldiers from Ukrainian artillery, alleging that the Russian army lacked proper weapons and reconnaissance capabilities to spot enemy artillery.
"There was a tough situation with the senior bosses in which it was necessary either to keep quiet and be a coward or to say it the way it is," Popov said in the voice message.
Popov said he was dismissed shortly afterwards. Upon his arrest in May 2024, popular Russian military bloggers spoke out in his defence, casting him as a talented general who had been punished for speaking truth to power.
