Michelle Lim Davidson in the beautifully shot Goldstone, a neo-noir Australian Western and an under-appreciated masterpiece.

Just watched it again and noticed a recurring theme that for several characters (Tommy, Josh, Bear) there’s a specific moment when they make a brave choice to stop doing the wrong thing and start doing the right thing, and somehow there’s something similar about May’s decision to ask Josh for help.

Mystery Road (2013)

A solid noir-western procedural with fine performances, excellent cinematography, and outstanding sound design. Aaron Pedersen anchors the movie well as the taciturn loner cop caught between worlds, truly welcome nowhere.

The sequel, Goldstone, is perhaps less technically accomplished but more compelling.
