7 Blak artists YOU should be listening to because they're ridiculously good and you're frankly missing out
Spinifex Gum/Marliya - teenage youth choir of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and women from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Like a lot of Aboriginal music, their songs are often a combination of protest and hope. All the sounds used in their songs (outside of vocals) are recordings of everyday sounds in their local communities. CW for mention of police brutality & deaths in custody for Ganalili.
But somewhere deep down in the dark there sings
It's always dark before the light breaks in
Ganalili is the Yindjibarndi word for the glow at the beginning of dawn, between darkness and light.
Hey! I'm Yurala I know this ground
I'm Yurala don't dam it down
And the river's my body
Can you hear the thundering clouds?
Yurala is a Yindjibarndi word meaning 'rain-maker'.
Barkaa - proud Malyangapa Barkindji woman, certified Koori royalty & role model of Aboriginal girls everywhere. pretty much everything she touches is gold but Ngamaka (literally 'mother' in Barkindji language, a mourning song protesting the destruction of their sacred river Barkaa which she is named after) is a great starting point.
This land of the lucky? Nah, land of the mines
Destroying our country in front of your eyes and you stuck staying blind
Stuck being quiet to the facts
That the futures now dim for our kids
Yeah, greed rules the world, but I got a question
Where do you go when there's nowhere to dig?
Inkabee - ridiculously talented (and heartwarming) Noongar Wongi rapper/singer aged just 14!! His Like A Version cover of Where Is The Love is AMAZING and makes me smile-cry, but also his single "Saved By The Bell", which he made aged ELEVEN about how learning at school is gonna help him help his mob (family/community) is beautiful and a banger.
Woke up in the morning and I look up in the mirror and I say to myself (Myself)
"I'm doin' it for me and
I'm doin' it for everyone else"
3% - collaborative project of Nooky and Dallas Woods (both prominent solo Aboriginal musicians in their own right). 3% refers to the 3% of Australia's population that are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Their Like A Version reimagining of Youngblood is REALLY good, it's hard to explain but it's a hear me out. fyi the verses are significantly changed if that bothers you.
Baker Boy - Yolŋu hip hop artist, iconic, he's been in the scene for a while but he deserves a place on this list anyway. He incorporates a lot of Yolŋu language into his music and he's again yet to make a song that isn't a banger.
Marryuna is a Yolŋu word that means "dancing with no shame". basically just letting loose and freestyling.
Thelma Plum - also a classic, deserves a spot anyway, she's a proud Gomeroi singer and her work is really emotionally raw.
Do you know what it feels like
To be told that you are never right?
If I had lighter skin, maybe I would win
Does it make you want to think?
Kobie Dee - Gomeroi singer/songwriter/rapper, makes ridiculously good beats and music, you've heard this all before go listen.
This world I see
Ain't gonna last too long
And I must be a fool to really think that
I coulda changed it all with a song
But still I try
(maroubra villain is just fun tbh)
