Hello! I recently started on drawing and I like your style very much! Would you happen to have any tips for beginners? Like, I'm still trying to figure out my style, which is being a very difficult and slow process, and I practice lips alone, eyes alone, noses alone, and they happen to look good, but when I try to add it to a face, it doesn't work. It's like they don't harmonize (they indeed don't, in fact), but the problem is that, for example, the eyes I made for the whole face, it won't be same I did in the studies. Am I doing this right? No? I would like to know what you have to say! <3

Hi, thanks for your patience on this one! I've been trying to figure out what advice to give beyond "keep practicing" but I've never been very good at it. This is good practice for me to articulate myself. 😊 I'd put this under a cut if I wasn't on mobile but here we are.

Going over each part of the face for studies is great! You already know what to do. Two things that still help me:

Anatomy studies - there's tons of explanations from artists and others on how the parts of the face fit together. This includes how far apart each feature is as a general rule, and how to use cheats or guide lines in your art.

Portrait studies! I have a whole separate pinterest board dedicated to character inspirations, and I'll go through it to find a picture to try and replicate as closely as I can. That way I can put the guide lines I've learned to use and see how it really fits together on a face. It might help you make everything look more cohesive, since you're using the same reference and drawing all the features at the same time.

It sounds right now that while you're trying to figure out a style and mash it all together, the first would be good to start with. And as always, scouring the internet for styles you'd like to emulate or draw from is going to be super helpful!

All this said, though, everyone's journey is different. This is what I remember doing when I started taking art seriously, and the best I can do is share my experiences!

No need to be sorry, it was probably already asked.. and I probably never answered because I’m awful about answering questions! Also I said I was going to put together a big reading list and then just never did it! So you’re really helping me out by giving me an opportunity here!

Ok so I know you asked for books, but there are also lots of interesting papers you can read online as well (which have the added bonus of being free), so I’m going to include them below too:

Translations:

The Saga of the Volsungs: With the Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok by Jackson Crawford [Amazon]

The Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok by Ben Waggoner [Amazon]

Both of these are good, I think the Ben Waggoner one might be more interesting because it has translations of multiple texts other than Ragnar’s saga . But, the Volsung saga is really great too and the Volsung saga is basically a prequel to Ragnar’s saga anyway so it can be nice to read them together imo.

The Matter of the North: The Rise of Literary Fiction in Thirteenth-Century Iceland by Torfi H. Tulinius, translated by Randi C. Eldevik [academia.edu] (it covers many sagas, so I guess in this case I’m recommending the specific sections about ragnar’s saga but the whole thing is really good imo)

Vikings in the West: The Legend of Ragnarr Loðbrók and His Sons by Elizabeth Ashman Rowe [Yes I had to buy this from the publisher whose site is in German]

Studies in "Ragnar's Saga Lodbrokar" and Its Major Scandinavian Analogues by Rory McTurk [Amazon]

So those last two books... are very expensive, to the point where I had to debate whether or not I should put them on the list. Because they don’t feel quite like they’re in the same vein as the other examples I listed which are either free to read or in the case of the translations, modestly priced. In the end I decided to include them because I found them interesting and useful, but hopefully there’s enough easily accessible stuff too.
