from the get-go, nancy is portrayed as the type of girl who does what she has to in order to thrive in her small-town, suburban life. straight a’s, perfect demeanor, rule-follower (to an extent). despite all this, she also has sprinkles of rebellion mixed into her actions (i.e. allowing steve into her room without her parents’ permission, telling them she’s going to an event in honor of will when she goes to steve’s place instead with nancy for a kickback, etc.) i think that with this combination in the type of actions she makes, she seems conflicted with what she wants out of life. jonathan calls this out later when they’re in the woods together, saying that she’s ‘another suburban girl who thinks she’s rebelling’. additionally, her distaste for her parents’ life, cul-de-sac, 2 1/2 kids, and all, highlights how much she doesn’t want to fall into that pattern, but in season one, i think she doesn’t know how to avoid it.
in season two, nancy seems to have shed her demeanor as the perfect girl-next-door, turning into a grittier version of herself who isn’t afraid of breaking the rules and getting revenge for barb’s sake. when she disappears from school with jonathan with the motivation of exposing the lab and everything that’s happened, she seems to thrive more when she’s on the run and fighting for a cause. this is also seen in season 3 when she goes against what her bosses at the hawkins’ post ask her to do after she gets pushed to the breaking point of them making a mockery out of her and her ambitions.
looking at nancy’s overall character arc, i think that with all her trauma, she might eventually want a life where she feels like she can breathe, but that might not be in the cards for her for a while, especially since she’s expressed a dislike for the homebody life that her parents lead. however, i also don’t think she necessarily seeks a life of glory - recognition for her hard work and grit? absolutely. but she hasn’t demonstrated herself to be the type of person who does things for the sake of praise and honor - she does things when she believes she’s right and fighting for a worthy cause, whether it’s the truth or justice for anyone who hasn’t been fought for, like barb.
