Fun With HTML5: My iPhone Mobile Site
I play around with a lot of mobile dev kits, both native and Web-based. That said, I needed to brush up static mobile Web development as I've been behind a desk for a while but hate to lose my HTML5/CSS3 chops, so I whipped up a fun iPhone-esque mobile version of my website.
About a year ago I wrote an article called "Simulating an iPhone App: iWebKit vs. iUI" that compared the available mobile frameworks, specifically ones that focused on emulating the iPhone environment. iUI and iWebKit were the two that rose to the top and iUI was far more efficient for highly dynamic sites like news, entertainment, blogs and social applications. iWebKit did a great job of simulating the iPhone's menu structure, but required more babysitting and frequent hacks.
This time around I opted for iWebkit, now on version 5.x, and simply modified the hell out of the source code to suit my needs. It's a great set of scripts, primarily developed by France-based Chris Plieger, that allows you to interface with the iPhone's dialer, SMS and Mail directly from the Web.
Check out the mobile site. Enjoy!
