Stuff I wish I could communicate to my iwes.
In Bemba, iwe is the informal way to say “you”. People also use it to call to people like “Iwe!” I take it as “Hey you!”. Peopla ALSO use it to refer to the mass of young children running around the village. I like to think each volunteer has their own little iwe army of children that come to their house everyday asking for balls, or sweeties, or coloring books. As I’m not fluent in Bemba and that’s all they speak here are some things I wish I could communicate to them.
“You asked me how I am 5 times and I said I’m fine. If you continue and ask me another 6 times I probably wont be fine anymore.”
“I love when you play with my hair, you can do it all the time, except you because one hand was just scratching your ringworm and the other hand was picking your nose.”
“No matter how many times you repeat it I’m still not going to know what [insert Bemba phrase] means.” (I’m sure they’re saying this to me about English as well)
“I can’t share this chocolate with you because I appreciate it so much more because it’s from America and from my parents and it helps keep me sane.”
“I can’t share these nice art supplies with you because I appreciate them so much more because they’re from America and from my grandmother and they help keep me sane.”
“Why didn’t you learn your ABCs in first grade?... or second?... or third?
“Stop chasing me on my bike because it causes me unbelievable anxiety.”
“Just give me 10 minutes alone to re-coop when I get home before you sit on my porch and stare at me for 5 hours.”
“Stop chewing on all my old food wrappers... and sticks.”
“The more you tease my dog the more he will chase, jump on, and bite you.”
“No I didn’t eat shima but can assure you that the full bowl of pasta I ate filled me up.”
“When you hit the dog to make him go away he runs even more to me because he knows I wont hit him.”
“You are so much stronger at 6 years old carrying that baby on your back and a water jug than I think I will ever be in my life.”
“I just gave you that shirt three hours ago and there are already 3 holes in it and its 4 shades browner than before.. and you look so happy.”
