Today I'm at @lanebryant & @refinery29's Every Body Beautiful Symposium & it's provoking a lot of thoughts for me about the realities of body positivity. Recently, I saw an interview with a bunch of plus size models discussing how their presence in the fashion industry is inspirational to straight size models. They said the straight sized models see plus models as proof that all models may (eventually) be allowed to let their bodies look "normal". These are words spoken by the faces and bodies found on every magazine, billboard and catwalk in the Western Hemisphere. The faces and bodies we've been trained to idolize. THOSE SAME PEOPLE look up to plus sized models because of their sheer audacity to look "normal." Just in case you're wondering, that's not ok. But the funny thing is, even plus sized models aren't actually encouraged to look 'normal'. They have to pad & sculpt their bodies into mini-Marilyn Monroes- but not all curvy women have big butts/ whittled waists/ large breasts. The majority of us have saggy breasts/ flat asses/pudgy bellies. Ultimately, there is no "normal" body- all of our bodies are unique & the ideals we're force fed aren't real. In spite of what's being forced down our throats, we have to figure out how to see through the bullshit. We have to find a way to start accepting ourselves as we are today. #seethe67 #iworkwithR29 #thisbody My outfit is by @lanebryant (at Manhattan, New York)
