Christopher Michael - "Mr. Bullet" Dope piece from IWPS 2015.
As I lay here, in the hotel for what will be my last night in DC, I can honestly say this has been one of the best experiences I've had. Here are my thoughts:
Coming in 57th out of 96 amazing poets is not a bad feeling considering this is my first PSI event and definitely not my last. Having received first in a round with a piece written and memorized hours before it's performance is enough of a win. In coming to the Individual World Poetry Slam I set three goals: 1. Put up work that I enjoy and I'm proud of 2. Leave it all on the stage 3. Network and take it all in Thanks to the help and support of my fellow Salt Lake Poets, I was able to do pieces that challenged me. Between the performance tips and writing help I was able to bring to life pieces that felt better than ever before. This tournament allowed me to take risks and be rewarded for them and I cannot express how good that feels. Regardless of the scores or the judges, being able to connect with people who tell you what your work means to them means more than anything. Witnessing the final stage I saw tonight gave me so much life. It's not everyday you get every poet who touches a stage to be a person of color, and believe me when I tell you how much Black and Brown excellence was left in that space. It was truly beautiful. IWPS was an entirely new ball game and I'm so glad I entered it. The past three days have been filled with light, love, power, strength and messages that needed to be heard. Never did I expect to meet and befriend this many poets that put their heart and soul into all that they do. I have learned so much. Thank you to everyone who made my IWPS experience one to remember. ❤
Feeling confident in my ability to represent myself well with these other poets. Tomorrow is make or break and I'm ready to kill it.
#SteelCitySlam TONIGHT, #iwpsdc TOMORROW!
IWPSDC, here I come!
Sitting at the gate, waiting for my flight to board.
