Izzy Camina · ANG3L NUMB3RS · Song · 2023
"I've been walkin' 'round town, seein' triple digits,
34117, then they start to fidget,
I'm on the right path, yeah, I'm talkin' to the angels,
I'm real good and calm, how I see it from all angles,
I'm walkin' down the street, seein' patterns in the pavement,
Yeah, I'm wavin', screamin' at strangers,
Rather smile in spitе of it all,
It's a fucked up world, and it's only getting worse..."

We go up, and we go down
How we go up, and we go down
Yeah I've been thinking about
We're hot and cold, the moon and sun
We don't know what it is that we're both running from
We make it rain, sadism and pain
The kind of thing that makes you want to rearrange your ways
Yeah you can stay, or you can walk away
But even when you leave you feel the rhythm rack your brain
Manipulate ideas of time and space
Just have faith in the future if you cannot feel your face
We go up, and we go down
How we go up, and we go down
Yeah I've been thinking about
We go up, and we go down
How we go up, and we go down
Yeah I've been thinking about
We're hot and cold, the moon and sun
We don't know what it is that we're both running from
A full eclipse, something you shouldn't miss
We eat each other's lies as they fall out of our lips
No need to try, humanity is sick
But it feel so much better when you seal it with a kiss
No need to cry, we'll sort it out with fists
A young Americana who's always been with the shits
We go up, and we go down
How we go up, and we go down
Yeah I've been thinking about
We go up, and we go down
How we go up, and we go down
Yeah I've been thinking about

“Kill Your Local Indie Softboy” by Izzy Camina
MG:
Let us gather today in prayer for Izzy Camina who dared to release “Kill Your Local Indie Softboy,” a song that is both scathing and really funny. Let us pray that it is not written off as a joke and that her whole burgeoning career is not then written off as that joke, but ongoing. Let us pray that her subtle spoken word and dreamy production are recognized as the song’s thrust (would it be less hilarious if she didn’t deadpan “he’s worse!” in response to his swearing he’s not a fuckboy? yes.) and not dismissed as gimmicks. After the deliciousness of Camina’s dressing down wore off, panic knocked. I’m not suggesting that all of these various artists deserved less judgment and more openness, but: Kreayshawn, Kitty, Meghan Trainor. All these women were written off because we laughed at them instead of the joke they made. It’s probably obvious but when I hear “Kill Your Local Indie Softboy” I think of Kitty’s “Okay Cupid” and I wonder if Izzy Camina will face the same steep challenges to grow and explore as an artist. Ultimately: probably not. She’s got someone paying to sort her into the appropriate algorithms and she’s not relying on Soundcloud becoming legitimate (it did -- not that its legitimacy ever rubbed off on Kitty.) The money and power that made it easy for me to find “Kill Your Local Indie Softboy” is enough to nuke a lot of derision but even the most robust label support isn’t a guarantee that Camina’s follow up will land softly. Enjoy “Kill Your Local Indie Softboy” and try your best to ignore the knot in your stomach.
DV:
It didn’t even occur to me that this could wind up as some kind of novelty hit! I love the chanted hook to “Kill Your Local Indie Softboy” but more than that I love the detail of the verses: the “stick n poke tattoos” and the “minimal techno”. And I love the way this sounds - aside from the reference points MG found - a bit like Lana Del Rey for a new decade, a throwback with a purpose and a target and teeth lurking just barely beneath its pleasant surface. “Softboy” is a relatively new term, but it’s a term for an archetype with history, most of it unquestioned - and all of it ripe for attack. Camina doesn’t waste words or time cutting into it, and it’s the kind of wound that feels like it has the potential to eradicate an entire type overnight. How do you recover from something like “Cool cat in a five panel hat”? You can’t, you don’t, you just drop that hat in an alley and hope no one remembers you ever wore it and hope you can move on. May all of Camina’s targets be hit just as mortally; it’s what they deserve.
