crazy how a person being named after a fictional character is considered cringe & lame & bad ONLY when trans people do it for themselves. because like, parents naming their babies after fictional characters (and pop culture in general) is very much just. an established normal thing. at my first job i was trained by a 35 year old cis woman named arwen after the lotr character. there are people in my immediate family named after characters from comic books and tv shows. i have a friend named rhiannon after the fleetwood mac song. i have another friend named ophelia because her mom loves shakespeare. and all of this is completely normal and acceptable. but when a trans guy names himself dave or jason or whatever suddenly that’s cringe and worthy of mockery. ok

one of my fave things about wally west is how he is literally the flash, a member of the justice league, one of the fastest people who’s ever lived, a superhero who’s saved the world dozens of times. and every time he talks about linda he’s immediately like “god my wife is the coolest person i know. i can’t believe how cool my wife is. can you believe someone as cool as linda wanted to marry me? i love her so much”

interesting thing imo where this general idea across the fandom that Comics Are Bad—and, in particular, that Old Comics Are Extra Bad—leads to even people who ostensibly like comics acting like comic writers can’t possibly be capable of writing intentionally or putting any thought or nuance into their creations. so you get, for example, the pervasive fandom belief that pre-crisis jason was “a carbon copy of dick” because the idea that their similar backgrounds may have been an intentional choice to draw parallels between dick and jason doesn’t even occur to people. it cant have been a deliberate character choice because, apparently, comic writers aren’t capable of that level of critical thought. it must simply be that they were so uncreative they recycled dick’s character for lack of actual ideas. a shockingly large portion of comics fandom acts like comic writers truly put no thought at all into their own writing and that any undeniable proof of good writing is simply a coincidence, an accident, a broken clock being right twice a day.

among other reasons why terms like "problematic" and "controversial" are functionally useless now is that they are also very often used to describe people whose controversy was like, caring about human rights. "this writer got dropped by their publisher because they're controversial" ok well do you mean controversial as in they sexually abused upwards of 60 young women or controversial as in they said that trans people dont deserve to be hunted in the streets purge-style

"bruce gets damian this thing for christmas" "jason comes over for christmas dinner" I DON'T CARE I DON'T CAAAAAAARE. what about jason coming over for shabbat dinner every week even when he and bruce are fighting. what about steph getting set on a path to conversion because bruce invites her to a purim festival and she feels really drawn to the story of esther. what about damian secretly getting really excited when he learns that because he's the youngest he gets a special role during the wayne family seder. does anyone hear me is anyone listening
