Jemaine Clement:

self-identifies as (a biracial) Māori;

has discussed growing up Māori (including performing the haka);

has discussed the discrimination he’s faced as a Māori (and, in at least one instance, as a biracial Māori specifically);

has discussed general life as a Māori;

speaks te reo Māori;

has made a point of passing on Māori traditions through his son; 

has asked people not to call him white; and (this cannot be emphasized enough)

self-identifies as (a biracial) Māori.

If people writing these takes actually cared, they would respect that and just call him Māori. They wouldn’t even have to know every last detail; they would just need to know that Jemaine calls himself Māori and leave it at that.

But no. They go to his Wikipedia page, see that his mother is Māori, and seemingly think, “How can we package this in a way that’s palatable to a white audience—in a way that makes him exotic and ready to be fetishized without actually worrying white people that the funny song man might not be Just Like Them™?” 

It’s just a huge racist and colonialist power play. People take what’s convenient for them and disregard the rest. It’s disgusting.

Oh, no! I don't want to orphan the poor thing, and I certainly don't want other people touching it. (In fact, I'd want everyone to keep their grubby fingers off it.)
