SHOW BUSINESS by Jack Bentley (Sunday Mirror - June 19, 1966)
There’s only one thing that would make me give up show business. That would be if the gloss went off it. When that happens and it becomes just a job, that’s the time to pack it in. But I find every performance as exciting as ever. There are some disappointments, though. I was offered a big contract with one of Hollywood’s top film companies, but my manager Brian Epstein turned it down. He said it was too long - seven or ten years, I think it was. I suppose he was right but I cried my eyes out. I was also asked to do several pop films. Don’t like those though. Then there was a big stage musical, but Brian said I wasn’t ready for that. He also keeps turning down lots of TV commercials. I agree with him. Although they’re worth lots of money they cheapen you. People think you’re broke to accept them.
