He comes from old money. He know he’ll never have to work a day in his life. Sure, he still might, to add to the fortune, but if he spent the rest of his life after graduation laying on his bed, he’d still be well off. Hell, that’s what his father has done his whole life-- sit around and drink while his mother went to work as a curse breaker for Gringotts.
He has a great relationship with his mother, but the one he has with his father is a different one. His father is angry and abusive, especially when drunk. He can’t bring himself to hold it against his dad, because he’s sure he wouldn’t be acting this way sober, but he still has a built up resentment for his father.
He takes out his anger at his dad and his insecurities as a person on people he doesn’t understand. The fact that he can’t wrap his head around how they’re so confident in who they are, or how they can be so strange and still be loved angers him, and he knows know other way than to get violent.
While most would assume he is a terrible student, he’s actually quite intelligent and does well in school. He just feels like other things in his life require more attention, and rarely studies or does homework.
He’s recently started playing quidditch, and it’s done wonders for him. It’s a way he can get his anger and aggression out, and as a result, he takes it out on other people much less.
