Former Dire Straits Guitarist Jack Sonni Dies at 68
- “Jack was a genuine guitar enthusiast who loved to play, jam and talk guitars and amps all day,” Mark Knopfler says
Jack Sonni, who played rhythm guitar with Dire Straits during the recording and touring of Brothers in Arms, has died.
Sonni, 68, died Aug. 31 of undisclosed causes, his former bandmates said.
“A sad farewell to our old friend Jack Sonni …, a genuine guitar enthusiast who loved to play, jam and talk guitars and amps all day,” Mark Knopfler said in a note on his website. “He joined us on tour during the Brothers in Arms era and took to life on the road with the band like a fish to water.
“Jack made friends wherever he went and will be missed by his many pals worldwide. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
Sonni was with the band from 1984 to ’88 and later joined other former Straits in Dire Straits Legacy, from which he recently stepped away for unspecified “health problems.”
“Our beloved Jack has left a void in our heart and soul,” DSL said in a statement. “We will miss you so much, you are forever with us.”
