Till the End- Chapter 3
This chapter is more subplot based and focuses on a personal head cannon of mine. I’ll give you a link to another one of my stories that talks about it at the end (don’t wanna spoil anything).
Chapter 2
Magic of thirds
When Chase returned to the cabin, the egos were all in the living room, looking like they were getting prepared for a funeral. Chase looked around at the others, he could tell from the looks on their faces that they already knew. “Where’s Marvin?” He asked, noticing the young magician wasn’t with them. Jackie boy pointed in the direction of the other rooms. He must have been in his bedroom. Marvin and Chase both had their own rooms, but when JJ showed up, they decided it was probably best if he stayed with Jackie since he was mute. One of their biggest concerns was making sure what happened to Henrik didn’t happen to the new kid either.
Chase gripped the back of the couch, leaning into it. “Sorry guys. He won’t help us. He said our mission is suicide,” He explained. The others just nodded, each one thinking the same thing. That Henrik was right. They didn’t even know what Jack’s plan was to get rid of Anti. He’d tried for a year now and every time, Anti would push back, only making himself stronger.
Chase couldn’t take the silence anymore. He left the other egos alone for now, walking to Marvin’s room. He gently knocked on the door before letting himself in. “Hey Marv,” He said, slowly peeking his head around the door. Marin was sitting on the floor flipping through a deck of cards. As Chase entered, he quickly threw his bangs down to cover his forehead.
“Chase, hey come in,” He invited him, cleaning up his cards. Chase walked in closing the door behind him and joining Marvin on the floor. Part of him wondered if the magician already knew, but then he realized he was probably the one that told the others about what happened with Schneeplestein.
Chase sat across from Marvin. He noticed the magician subconsciously fiddling with his bangs, trying to keep them in place. Chase gave him a concerned look. “Come on, Marv. You told me before remember. You don’t have to cover up.”
Marvin cheeks reddened. “Right, sorry Chase. I’m just not used to… not hiding I guess,” He said shyly.
Chase nodded. “It’s okay Marvin. I just want you to be comfortable. Does it hurt keeping it closed all the time?” Chase hoped he wasn’t crossing any lines by asking, but he knew Marvin would only tell him what he was okay with talking about.
The magician shrugged. “Kinda. It’s annoying while I’m awake. When I’m asleep it just kinda does it’s own thing,” He explained.
Chase shifted in his place a little. “Well if you feel comfortable, you don’t have to hide while I’m here. I don’t mind,”
Marvin perked up. “Really, you’re okay with that?” He inquired.
“Well I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t okay with it. Besides you’ve only showed me once. I kinda wanna see it just casually,” He tried to encourage Marvin as much as possible. He could tell the young ego was nervous but still wanted to let it out.
Marvin took a breath. “Okay if you’re sure,” He uttered moving his hair to the side. Chase watched the vertical slit in the middle of his forehead open, revealing a green eye. Marvin visibly realized, his shoulders dropping, letting out a heavy sigh.
Chase smirked. “Feeling better now?” Marvin just nodded. Chase couldn’t keep from glancing at it though. The third eye was shooting looks all around the room, Chase wondered if it could even see beyond that. Every now and then it would land on Chase. He couldn’t help but tense up at the look it gave. It almost felt like it was looking into his very soul. Trying to keep from being rude, Chase forced himself to draw his attention to the pile of cards Marvin was shuffling through. “So, you trying a new trick?” He asked.
Marvin smirked, his eyes still on his cards. “You know when it’s open I can tell what you’re feeling right?” He teased, glancing up with a smug expression.
“You can always tell what I’m feeling though,” Chase retorted.
“Ah, no,” Marvin pointed. “That’s only when emotions are amplified, and it effects all of us. My eye sees your aura, so I can tell you’re uncomfortable,” Marvin said sadly. He reached over to grab his mask. “Here I’ll just,”
Marvin was half way to putting it on when Chase grabbed his wrist. “No Marv, seriously it’s okay. I’m just not used to it is all. I’m sorry I don’t want you to think,”
“I know Chase,” Marvin put his mask down. “It’s honestly hard for me to deal with it too. Sometimes it can be a sensory overload,” Marvin made vague gestures with his hands. “Sometimes the things I see are more than just feelings and thoughts. Sometimes it give me visions of the future, or the past. Sometimes I see what’s going on in different places. It’s so unpredictable. Sometimes,” Marvin visibly froze up, Chase noticed. “Sometimes it doesn’t see anything. I don’t know how it’s supposed to work.”
“Have you tried controlling it?” Chase asked.
Marvin shook his head. “I don’t want to control it. I don’t want it to become any stronger than it is, I just want it to go away!” Marvin yelled and the stack of cards fell into a messy pile again. He looked up at it then to Chase.
“Marv?” Chase rested a hand on the magician’s shoulder.
His eyes were lined with tears slowly streaking down his cheeks. Chase wiped them away with his thumb, looking into Marvin’s eyes, avoiding the glances his third eye gave. the two shared a gaze then Marvin sighed heavily. “It’s late, we should both go to bed,” Chase sighed, but nodded anyways, helping him clean up the cards.
The two egos said their good nights and Chase walked into the hallway. He peeked into the living room, finding it empty before retreating to his own room.
As soon as Chase’s head hit the pillow, Henrik’s words echoed in his mind. “Fighting that glitch will only lead you to an early grave.” Then he thought about Marvin. His vision, looking into the future and the past. Had he seen something? What was it about these powers that terrified him so much? Chase didn’t know, and he didn’t want to. He was tired, he didn’t want to think about this now. All he wanted was sleep. At least he knew that would be peaceful.
