He didn’t mean to grow close to the visiting doctor. Yancy had started visiting the other because the space was free and the room was warm, but he did enjoy Henrik’s company. The pair got along pretty okay, and that was good enough for Yancy. It meant that the one day various problems in Yancy’s head came to the forefront, there was somewhere he could go, someone he could talk to as a distraction.
He’d joke and toss it aside, but not today. The truth was weighing him down too hard. He didn’t mean to blurt what was on his mind. Hands clasped his mouth but it was to no avail. The words were spoken, and the professional knew. Henrik’s words were generic and comforting, they would be easy to shake off with a comment about knowing the obvious. It was the action and the words following that that did the trick.
He cracked.
“No, you... youse don’t get it.” A hand reached up to grip Henrik, to hold on tight and not let go. Not yet. “T-there ain’t nothing out there for me no more. No one out there cares ‘bout a scumbag like me. I... I did something real bad, an’ I’m sure youse know ‘bout it. I ain’t blocked by some little problems, doc. I’m nothin’ but a problem. That’s all I am.”
