The adorable Jackson Bend.
The $350,000 Smile Sprint, Handicap (Gr.2) at Calder Race Course on July 6th is set to take off with a large field of 15 sprinters. The Smile Sprint marks the return of Champion Sprinter Trinniberg...
An Old Friend Returns
6-year-old millionaire Jackson Bend, recently unretired, is officially back in training at Calder Race Track in Florida
According to co-owner Fred Brei, Jackson Bend was pulled from his first season of stud due to lingering pain from the back injury that caused his initial retirement. He was put into light exercise in order to strengthen his back, but he showed so desire to run that his connections decided to return him to racing
He will remain in training at Calder, targeting an overnight allowance at present
A bitersweet "happy retirement" to one of my personal favorites, Jackson Bend
The 5-year-old son of Hear No Evil was officially retired today with a record of 9 wins from 28 starts, including eight stakes races. This year, he boasted a wins in the star-studded Carter Handicap and the Hal's Hope Stakes at Gulfstream. In all, he was won just over $1.6 million
The perennial fan favorite was injured in August after a bizarre training accident in which another horse ran into him. He finished seventh in the forego Stakes thereafter, and has never really recovered his form
SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Multiple Grade I stakes winner Jackson Bend and his exercise rider, Carlos Correa, suffered no apparent injuries in a collision with the 7-year-old gelding Little Nick Saturday morning on Saratoga's training track, according to veterinarian Dr. Joe Migliacci.
Trainer Nick Zito said he was told Little Nick ran into Jackson Bend's right side as Correa galloped him. "Thank God I didn't see it,'' Zito said. "He was lying on the track in shock for close to five minutes. All the vital signs were fine. It's a miracle.''
Migliacci said Jackson Bend had no signs of lameness or bone damage and felt better after receiving eight liters of electrolyte fluids. "I think he got the air knocked out of him,'' Migliacci said. "My general opinion is he's going to do well.''
Trainer Anthony Quartarolo said Little Nick wasn't hurt. "He walked onto the track, was spooked by something and bolted,'' he said. (x)
Update 1:
Update 2:
So he should have been on the track today if all went well.
What gets me is this sentence though:
"He was lying on the track in shock for close to five minutes."
Oh my god.
Why is this the first I've heard of Jackson Bend getting getting slammed into the track by another horse during training? wtf.
