How did the idea of Monster and Me come to be and what was the thought process behind the designs for you and your husband? The colourful versions of contradicting the pure black and white version are so cool! Definitely gives me Yin and Yang vibes lol

Monster and Me is, to try and put it simply:

A story about travelling worlds, and a metaphor for being the gods of your own universe. What if you could travel through all these worlds we see as ‘fandoms’?

It follows the Match Head (Demi Duality) and her husband Jackson Murto as they traverse multiverses, dimensions, and other worlds. It’s based on our personal experiences, and told through the meaningful connections we both have to various characters and worlds growing up, that influenced us both creatively.

Jackson, a Sandman, aka the Wanderer. He has a purpose, but chose to stray, to be with her.

Demi, a girl who was chosen by chance when the Match; a being of creation and bright half to the Pantheon of Duality, sought her for its new body in a desperate act of survival.

Both Demi and Jackson have their own unique lore, worlds, and reality bending abilities, as well as friends and allies from worlds they’ve connected to (and in some cases, altered).

It’s wayyyyy too much lore to get into here, for both parties.

To answer your question specifically- The monochrome and colourful aesthetic comes from Match and Ink, the two halves of the Duality. Both represent creation. The Match: passion, energy, light, heat, life and intense fire that burns as well as creates. The Ink: macabre, beauty of darkness, horror, night, flesh, and contrasts. The grief, solace and dark beauty of creation.

The Duality couldn’t keep itself together, the irony of its own existence. After tearing itself in two, the Match selfishly ran from Ink as it was scared it would drown, and left in its own Core, Ink became corrupt and stewed in her own rot to eventually create the dimension-devouring Void and the De’amons that spread like a virus in chase of its other half- the Match.

(Ink is later restored with Jackson’s help, and one of Jackson’s replicants Mister Masque but that’s another whole arc)

The name funnily enough comes from my original little comic strip series about Demi (then Dilemma) and Monster being goofs. It just stuck. Seeing as Monster is a central character and one of Demi’s Wonders of the Wastes.

To give you an idea of how extensive and ice bergy Monster and Me lore is, this is just a partial list of the ‘arcs’ or ‘chapters’ in Match Head’s Chronicles before she met Jack. (Feel free to guess at what worlds they’re set in lmao). There’s so much more they do after meeting, including the whole story of restoring Ink Blot.

Who is Jack? From everything that I have seen on your blog (wonderful btw) I haven't seen very much of this character. I had always assumed Demi and the Tenth Doctor were a couple. Apologies if this is too personal, I'm a big fan of David Tennant.

Hope you don't mind me dropping a little lore ask - has Jackson ever met the Doctor, or had Converse and Demi already parted ways by the time Jackson met her?

That’s possibly one of the largest lore asks you could make considering how tangled that storyline is 😂

Also note: Demi’s core world also acts as a pit stop, or travel lodge for various realities. Those she gives keys to can access the Looking Glass, and in turn the Crossroads at will, which means she’s interacting with many familiar faces when there. Including multiple versions of the same people and Realm Twins, sometimes at the same time. 🌀

Jackson met the Fourth when he was young, so different man but…same alien. That makes sense yea

Demi’s travels with the Tenth took place earlier in her personal timeline, before she met Jackson.

They parted ways twice, once when he eventually regenerated, and again when Demi destroyed herself in order to change that event. A third time isn’t possible due to certain mistakes having impacted several timelines (I said it was tangled af)

So Jack technically met the Doctor before Demi met either of them. And the Doctor met both of them at the same early(ish) points in their timelines, but 6 regens passed for him in between. Funky timey wimey stuff

Does Demi Duality have a dedicated romantic interest? A girlfriend/boyfriend? Married?

Happily married to her husband, Jackson Murto the Sandman. A very very long story short; Jack restored her when she was destroyed, and she guided him through what was basically an equivalent of Sandman purgatory. Been together since. 💫

Demi has ✨extensive✨ lore before meeting her hubby, she had many a crush and 2 intense entanglements ‘relationships’- One with an alien in sneakers and the other with an alchemical abomination. Things can get a little muddled when you travel through realms without much control over the time period of said realm you end up in. And when the cosmic entity inside you lures people to you without your control.
