I think the internet acting as if there’s some set in stone guidelines about how to write stories or make original charcaters is really a shame because you had all these advice things pushing that say, any character with magical powers or who was a chosen one was tired and poorly written and the only good protagonist was just a completely regular person, because in the end tropes are tools and can be used effectively or ineffectively.
For example, while the chosen one trope is often brushed aside as lazy writing, stories that examine the pressure placed on someone in a chosen one role, question what it truly means to be chosen for some greater purpose you didn’t perhaps ask for, or even feature the chosen one rebelling against what they were chosen to serve after realizing it’s not what they want can be very interesting, just as stories about some random person just choosing to fight the bad guy of their own accord can be very boring. Writing and telling stories isn’t as simple as “some ideas are good, others are bad”, because it really depends on the individual writer.
Aside from that, not every story needs to be an incredible epic to make you weep! Sometimes you just want to write for fun, sometimes you just want to make ocs who fall in love from opposing baseball teams, or mermaids who are just sorta vibing but fun to draw!!! The pressure that if you’re posting content online it needs to follow a specific set of quality standards to be a “good story” is incredibly damaging to young creators and probably discouraged a lot of would be artists who just found they couldn’t make something to please the standards the Internet said they had to meet.
Anyway, this is kinda rambling but truly make what makes you happy!! Don’t listen to the people who think if you don’t write the next classic novel or make the next iconic film what you make isn’t worthwhile- have fun!
(Note: I am referring to annoying dudebros who kids for making their main character a magic princess or call any female character that breathes a Mary Sue. This does not apply to people who include racist or lgbtphobic narratives or draw caricatures/make characters that are stereotypes, if your work harms real people you need to change that.)
