“I somehow missed this Prince album for a long time. Purple Rain was my entry point, which I had only on cassette tape for a decade, but his follow up Parade was the very first vinyl LP I ever bought. With my own pocket money too, I might add. I explored backwards to 1999 and Dirty Mind but somehow skipped Controversy. I don’t think this was deliberate. In the 80s, Prince was releasing an album a year: Around The World In A Day, Sign O The Times, Lovesexy – so it was hard to keep up! . Soundwise it has a similar feel to Dirty Mind: lean clean shiny synths and tight funk bass and beats, only it’s less dirty and one of Prince’s more openly political records. He’s always sung about social issues and sexual politics; here he tackles the nuclear arms race (Ronnie, Talk to Russia), the Atlanta child murders of Black people evangelical church of America (Annie Christian) and social protest and racial politics in general in the title track Controversy: “People call me rude / I wish we all were nude / I wish there was no black and white / I wish there were no rules.” . Then there’s the stereotypically Prince ‘sex’ songs: Jack U Off, Do Me Baby and Sexuality, which could all have found their home quite comfortably on Dirty Mind, released the year earlier in 1980. Though the album doesn’t contain any of his biggest hits, it was very commercially successful, and is notable for a number of things: (space constraints - see comments!) Compared to the other albums Prince released unto the world, it’s not in the top five, it may only (just) be in the top ten, but those top ten are highlights in the world of pop music. I may have somehow missed it out as a newly fanatical Prince fan at the age of 13, but I’m now giving it the love it deserves.” .
