SUNFLOWER BEAN - Manchester, UK
Jacob Faber 3: Session
"Now Jacob," Doctor York said, "this therapy is very complicated. It might take several months to finish."
"I think I can handle it," Jacob said.
"Okay," York said. "What you need to do is imagine yourself in a large room with doors and many floors, maybe surg a staircase running around the room, going up. The rooms are where your old memories that have been bothering you are stored. You'll have to imagine a furnace too, to get rid of the memories."
"They're not just bothering me, they're destroying me."
"Just close your eyes and imagine yourself in the room. Then just let yourself drift off, staying in that room."
"Okay," Jacob said.
Jacob closed his eyes and imagined himself in the room. It was five stories high, and there was a thin staircase with a rail along the wall, which he could walk along. At each door, there was a landing for entering each door. The walls were tan like sandstone, and the doors were blood red. The doors had labels on them. Jacob started up the steps to the door that was marked: The Start of the Misery.
Jacob opened the door, and inside there were boxes sitting on shelves. Each box was labeled, and some were light-colored, and the others were dark-colored. Jacob figured that the dark boxes were the bad memories. Jacob walked over to the one that said: The First Beating.
Jacob picked up the box, took it out of the room, down the stairs to the furnace in the middle of the room.
When he got to the furnace, he opened the door, lit the fire, and started emptying the box. It was full of papers. Some seemed very dry and brittle, while others seemed to be covered in a sort of goo. The fire hungrily devoured all of the pages within seconds, and then Jacob threw in the box.
When the papers and box were burnt to a crisp, Jacob walked back up the stairs, into the room to get another box. He continued this process until all of the bad memory boxes were burnt, and then he went back to the middle of the room and closed his eyes. Then he woke up in Doctor York's office.
"Did it work?" York said, when Jacob opened his eyes.
"Yeah," Jacob said. "It worked all right. I got one whole room of bad memories burnt, and I am exhausted."
"Really?" York said, incredulously, "you were only out about thirty minutes."
"Really?" Jacob said, "it felt more like hours."
"Well," York said, "at least you got some work done. Well, I guess we can cut this session short. I'll see you tomorrow Jacob. Hope you have a good rest of the day." Doctor York got up and opened the door.
"Alright," Jacob said, standing. "See ya."
Jacob walked out of the office. When he got out of the building, Jacob got out his cell phone and called Mary. "Mary," Jacob said when she picked up. "I'm out of my session."
"Already?" Mary said in disbelief. "I thought that you would be there a few hours at least."
"Well, Doctor York let me out early," Jacob said.
"Okay," Mary said. "I'll be there in a few minutes."
Jacob hung up his phone and returned it to his pocket and waited until his aunt arrived.
Mary arrived ten minutes later. "Why were you out so early?" She asked when Jacob got in the car.
"We discovered a way that makes our sessions shorter."
"Oh."
"So what are we going to do tonight?"
"I think we'll just take it easy. I think that we'll go and get something to eat, and take it home." Mary looked at Jacob, hoping to get his approval.
"Okay."
