THE FARRIER FAMILY — FAMILAE HONORI
Alphard Farrier is very much the typical patriarch. He’s stern, protective, and incredibly loyal. He’s reliable and trustworthy toward those close to him, but if he smells betrayal he will not hesitate to punish. At Hogwarts, he was both Prefect and Head Boy for Slytherin and was a stellar student, excelling in almost all of his classes and proceeding in life with a high ranking Ministry job in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He becomes one of the Dark Lord’s most faithful followers and is willing to die for his cause.
Marietta Farrier (née Abbott) is most loyal to her husband. Wherever he goes she follows. She’s a loving mother and has taught her two children everything there is to know about blood purity and how they must live up to the Farrier family motto: Familae Honori, family and honour. Marietta is a talented witch, especially in Herbology and Alchemy, and is fascinated by Dark Magic. She is not typically submissive and sometimes surprises people with her fierceness when she subverts stereotypes after initially portraying herself as the protective mother & devoted wife.
Jacob Farrier is most well known for getting expelled from Hogwarts after attempting to find the legendary Cursed Vaults. He was a great student, although spent most of his time in detention. After going missing for a number of years, Jacob settles easily back into his life and soon becomes an esteemed Auror, but despite sitting on the fence when it comes to ideals, he’s forced by his parents to fight for the Dark Lord. He is also a stereotypical big brother and teases his younger sister just as much as he loves her (a lot) and is both headstrong and resilient.
Juliette Farrier, endearingly known as Jules, is known for uncovering the secrets of the Cursed Vaults and will go down in history for it. She has always disagreed with her parents dilluded ideals concerning blood purity and chooses to judge somebody based off of their actions and words instead. She, like her father, excels in most subjects, in particular Defence Against the Dark Arts and Charms, which she uses to her advantage to later become a Curse-Breaker. Jules is courageous, ambitious, gentle, and would lay down her life for those she loves.
THE FARRIER FAMILY
featuring Rufus Sewell as Alphard Farrier, Caitriona Balfe as Marietta Farrier, Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Juliette ‘Jules’ Farrier, and David Lambert as Jacob Farrier
As a child, Jules was very close to her parents. She looked up to her father and wanted to have a Ministry job like he did and she wanted to be as fearless as her mother. She liked that she looked a lot like them, too, with having her father’s brown eyes, her mother’s round face and pale skin, and both of their dark hair.
Alphard was never one for physical displays of affection, but was more than happy to hug his children when they had nightmares or needed comforting. He wasn’t afraid to show that he was a dedicated father, but was more concerned with portraying himself as a man of great power who deserved the utmost respect in the general sense and even portraying himself that way to his children. It was Alphard that read bedtime stories to Jules since Jacob was never fussed about them. She loved that he could do the funny voices of the characters and read the stories with a genuine smile: a sure sign that he wasn’t just pretending to enjoy it.
Marietta was a typical over-protective mother and only let Jules and Jacob occasionally play in the nearby fields out of fear of them breaking bones or even worse. Neither Jacob nor Jules were the rough and tumble type even if they did try to climb the highest trees and slide down the bannisters, so Marietta needn’t really worry. She also tried to get her children interested in Herbology by showing them her plants that she kept in the garden greenhouse, but they both hated the subject, which initially upset her. But Marietta did introduce Jules to Alchemy and she really took to the subject, eventually taking it as an option at Hogwarts and passing her N.E.W.T. exam with flying colours. It wa some of Marietta’s proudest moments.
Alphard and Marietta were pleased when Jules was sorted into Slytherin- the house that the Farriers had been sorted into for several generations. Being a former Prefect and Head Boy himself, Alphard was determined for Jules to follow in his footsteps. He wanted her to be a shining example in all areas, both academically and personally, which she found difficult to keep up with. However, she didn’t want to disappoint them so became dedicated to her role and hoped that she was going to be better than her father at it.
As Jules grew older she drifted further apart from her parents. She completely disagreed with their ideals on blood purity and loathed the fact that they were trying to control the direction her life was heading. Both Alphard and Marietta were concerned that Jules now wanted to become a Curse-Breaker; she’d talked about being a part of Magical Law Enforcement for the majority of her childhood and for her to want to do something so reckless was, in her parents’s eyes, incredibly stupid. So naturally Jules was going to do just about anything to prove that she was more than worthy of pursuing her dream career and eventually (almost reluctantly) Alphard and Marietta gave in; they knew their daughter and they knew she wasn’t going to consider anything else.
And speaking of Curse-Breakers, Jules’s parents didn’t take kindly to the fact that she was dating Bill Weasley. Marietta especially despised the idea after trying to get her daughter to see ‘proper pureblood boys, not one of the traitorous ones’. They feuded over it for a good while and even though Marietta won the argument she could plainly see that Jules was never going to stop loving him. Jules was deeply affected where this was concerned: she was scared that her parents were going to hurt the Weasleys if she even uttered Bill’s name and for a number of years she tried to fight her feelings, but in the end they prevailed and she chose to live and love her way. She no longer wanted her life dictated by anyone other than herself.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, Alphard was hellbent on trying to get his daughter to fight on the Dark Lord’s side, saying how family had to stick together no matter what. But neither he nor Marietta had been Jules’s family in a long time. And so she persisted in trying to free herself from his iron grip, simultaneously screaming about how fighting for the Dark Lord was like fighting a losing game. This time she was determined not to let her father win over her. Bill had been with her at the time and was more than ready to duel Alphard if things escalated. But Alphard became angry and frustrated so fled back to castle to rejoin the fight. Jules never saw him again.
After the battle, Jules wasn’t sure what family was anymore. She’d been led to believe it was all about blood and honour and loyalty, but soon realised that family- whether they’re relatives or not- is about those who love you the most and about those who would protect you with their lives. And Jules found that in the Weasleys and in the friends she’d made at Hogwarts.
They were her family now.

— CHAPTER 4 FROM MOONDUST
Setting: 1984/1985 (1st Year)
Word Count: 835
The name Jacob Farrier followed Jules around in hushed whispers. His name was a like a ghost, passing through walls and sending chills through the spines for those who knew of his... escapades.
"You're the sister of that disgrace," one boy had said.
"Did he really run away to serve You-Know-Who?" Asked a girl.
"Traitor," hissed another.
The more she heard his name, the more Jules felt pain. She missed Jacob unequivocally and life had never been the same since he disappeared. Their mother was naturally the most distraught and Jules could still hear the echoing painful wails that had graced the family manor the day they learned the news.
She tried to smile at the memory of her and Jacob pretend duelling with liquorice wands in the garden, laughing and screaming like nothing else mattered.
But one evening, as everyone began to eat in the Great Hall, Jules found herself without an appetite and a need to be away from everything and everyone. The overwhelming pressure that she'd experienced in that one day alone was enough to reduce her to tears. But she had to be strong. She had to be strong for Jacob.
The clocktower courtyard was tranquil. The breeze was gentle and the splashing of the water in the fountain was a relaxing change from the chaos of the Great Hall. The sun was setting, but it was mostly cloudy so there'd be no pretty pink skies and golden light.
But Jules distracted herself by reading for a while. She'd dug out Hogwarts: a History from her bag and read a couple of chapters before putting it back and sitting quietly, closing her eyes and enjoying the breeze and twittering of the birds in the trees.
"Hello."
Startled, quickly Jules spun around to see Bill stood with a soft smile of his face, his satchel over his shoulder, and his tie draped around around his neck. She'd almost fallen asleep, so part of her was glad that Bill had shown up.
"I didn't hear you," she said as he approached her.
"Sorry. Mum's always telling me to be quiet around my baby brother when he's sleeping. Force of habit."
Jules then turned back around, fiddling with the end of her tie. She felt somewhat hungry now, but couldn't bare the thought of showing her face in the Great Hall. She didn't want to be stared at and mocked.
"How did you know I was here?" She then asked.
"Rowan said you weren't hungry and wanted some space. This a good place for some quiet."
"I'm guessing you've heard the gossip, then..."
"Yeah, but that's all it is. Gossip. It doesn't mean it's true."
"Everyone thinks it's true, so it might as well be."
Bill shrugged, sitting down beside her. "He's your brother. You knew him best... If any of my brothers were subject to school rumours I'd be as annoyed as you are."
"Then you know how Merula makes me feel."
Upon even mentioning the name, Jules could feel her blood boil. Merula Snyde- a fellow first year Slytherin- had been actively encouraging rumours about the Farrier siblings and she found great pleasure in bringing misery to Jules's life.
"I hope she gets her comeuppance one day," Bill then mused. "Horrible people like her usually do."
"I hope you're right," Jules replied.
She then fell into silence. She imagined Merula's snarky face and wanted to throw a punch to it. There was as much dirt on Merula as there was on Jules: her parents were in Azkaban and Jules realised that it made her insecure. Perhaps it was the root of her nastiness. Perhaps her nastiness was a defence mechanism.
"Have you done the Potions essay that's due on Monday?" Bill then asked, switching the subject.
Jules closed her eyes, sighing frustratedly. "Snape's going to give me detention again."
Bill couldn't help but laugh. "You have the weekend. I'll help you if you want; I still need to finish it, so we could meet in the library on Saturday morning."
"Would you? That'd be great. Honestly. Thank you."
"No worries. You'll owe me a box of Every Flavour Beans, though."
Jules scoffed. "Dream on. I might stretch to a Chocolate Frog if you're lucky."
"Deal. As long as I don't get another Godric Gryffindor card. I've got about five of those."
"I can't make any promises."
Smiling in an amused fashion, Bill got to his feet and straightened down his robe. "I'll leave you in peace. But don't let anyone get to you. You've got people like Rowan on your side and she's worth a million of Merula."
And so, he turned on his heels and headed back inside the castle, leaving Jules with a soft smile on her face. It was first time she'd felt happy that day. But Bill was right. Rowan had her back and all Jules needed was her friends by her side and she could get through anything that the world threw at her...
