1. “What if I kissed you right now?”

63. “You’re amazing, did you know that?”

He sits at his desk, numb, blood cold and fingers shaking. The world continues around him: cops bustling around and pens flying across paperwork and the static of walkie-talkies. But in Jake’s eyes, the world has stopped, a blurry pause devoid of sound and life.

Show me going: that’s what she said. Amy. His fiancée. The woman he’s supposed to marry in two weeks.

He had tried to stumble out of the bullpen when those three words rang throughout the room, but Terry pulled him back. “Jake—“ he said. “Jake, you need to take a breath.”

He does breathe, but it doesn’t feel right. Each breath feels like it is being yanked out of him, ice against his lungs, shards in his throat. He thought if he were to be in a situation like this, one where the love of his life is in danger and he can go all John McClane, everything would be clear. Each move of his would be calculated and decisive. Grab a gun and burst onto the scene and save the day (“I don’t need to be saved,” Amy would say, but Jake doesn’t care. He’s there and he will always be there).

The moment is now here, and he is frozen, paralysed in earth-shattering fear. Panic envelopes him, settles across his skin and sinks into his nerves like a vice. Amy would tell him to count down from ten, but every time he gets to four, he thinks, there are four cops injured and three people dead and—

Holt watches Jake from his office as if he were a flight risk. Charles keeps offering to bring him food, and Rosa lingers closer than usual. Terry’s blood pressure fluctuates and not even Gina can make a joke about the situation. No one really knows what to do except wait. Earlier, Holt placed a fatherly hand on Jake’s shoulder and Jake only jerked away, something so out of character and something he knows he’ll regret later, but he cannot handle another person’s sympathy. He just wants Amy back. And everyone says, we do too, but they don’t understand. She’s my fiancée, he wants to scream. I can’t live without her.

But he sits quietly, and everything feels colder.

Then—and Jake wonders if he imagined it at first—there’s the ding of the elevator. His head cocks up, and it’s Amy. Amy who looks worn and tired, but alive and breathing and there. Pieces of hair fall out of her ponytail, and exhaustion is smudged under her eyes. The paused world hits play once more, and he is tripping towards her, his body catching up with his mind. She’s here, she’s alive, she’s here. Everyone stays where they are as Amy enters the bullpen, but Jake is running and pulling her into his arms, burying his face into the crook of her neck. “Amy,” he says as if it is spilling out of him. “Amy.”

“I’m sorry, baby,” she whispers. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“You’re here,” he says firmly. “That’s all that matters.”

Eventually, Jake lets go of Amy and lets everyone else get in their warm welcomes. Even Holt gathers Amy into a light hug and says, “You had us worried, Sergeant Santiago.” Jake is never far behind, his eyes following her and his hand skimming across the small of her back. Minutes later, he is able to steal her away back to his desk and collapses into his chair, mentally exhausted. She pulls the other chair next to his desk closer to him and rests her hand over his.

“Are you okay?” she asks, quiet and tentative.

He softly chuckles. “Shouldn’t I be the one asking you that?”

She sees right through him. “Jake.”

His gaze falls to his feet and exhales sharply. “I froze, Ames.”

“What?”

“I wanted to go to the scene and help you, but I completely froze. I was so terrified.”

“Jake,” she brings her pointer finger under his chin and tilts his face up to her. “I didn’t want you at the scene. There were already a lot of cops there, and I don’t think I could have handled knowing you were there too.”

His voice is low, heavy and sliced with harshness: “I thought I could be the hero, but I couldn’t do fucking anything.”

“You being here,” she cuts in. “That was enough. More than enough. The whole time I was in Brooklyn Heights, all I could think about was how I would get to see you once we got the shooters. That’s what kept me safe, babe, knowing I’d come back to you.”

His lips softly curve at that, before briefly faltering once more. “I’m happy you’re safe and I’m happy you’re here, but I can’t stop shaking.” Her eyes dart down to his right leg; it rapidly bounces. “I don’t know what to do. I can’t ever lose you, okay? Just the idea of it makes me panic. You’re safe, and yet, I can’t stop—“

“What if I kissed you right now?” she asks, forgoing their general rule of no kissing at work.

He pauses before gently nodding, and she leans in, his lips soft and tentative under hers. She feels him unwind, an imaginary weight drifting from his shoulders. His leg stops bouncing and his hand cups her cheek, their mouths barely moving, still and solid. I won’t leave, this kiss says. I’m here.  

She tugs her head back and looks him in the eyes. They’re a touch brighter, less severe and hollow.

“You’re amazing, did you know that?” he says. “And I can’t wait to marry you.”

She smiles, and for the first time in hours, he does too.

“Well, your baby is in perfect health,” the doctor says with a smile and both parents let out a sigh of relief as they share a loving look.

Jake can feel Amy holding his hand tighter as they quickly bring their gazes back on the screen, where they’re able to see their future child for the very first time. A new wave of emotion and love, so much love — for both the woman currently lying next to him and the tiny healthy human that’s growing inside of her — washes over him, and he can’t retain the tear that falls down his cheek when it hits him even harder than usual than they’re truly doing this; in just a few month’s time, they’re going to welcome a third member into their little family.

I am sorry :( really :( its 1:23pm right now and I am gonna sleep for an hour in some time. I still have LOTS of work for today. also, I will be free on tuesday, tuesday is the last day I will be up late/messing up. from wednesday, a FULL 6-7 hour sleep! maybe even 8 but that’s on a good day :)
