She was an important contributor to the formation of the wartime Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). She worked with Amelia Earhart to open the Bendix air race to women. She was the first women to fly a bomber across the Atlantic. She won won five Harmon trophies as outstanding woman pilot. At the time of her death, she was known as the "Speed Queen" and held more speed, distance, and altitude records than anyone in aviation history. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for her wartime service.
