Jadite Galleries is pleased to announce the solo exhibition from Yasuhiko Ohata, dentist-turned-artist from Shizuoka, Japan. The exhibition will run from June 6 through Ju ne 10, 2017 at Jadite Galleries, 413 West 50th Street, New York City, with an opening reception for the artist on Tuesday, June 6 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Ohata, an active dental practitioner, creates various miniature ornaments by applying a dental technique of alloy casting. The alloy material in his works, consisted of gold, palladium and silver, is generally used for dental practice and are only to be found in Japanese clinics. O hata finds hidden beauty in the object to which is otherwise hardly paid detailed attention except for practical use.
The exhibition by showcasing nearly 50 miniature works explores heart-warming moments in our daily lives. "Why should I not create art, full of humor and jokes, when we all can live life only once?” Ohata says. He recalls his childhood of throwing his slippers in the sky to wish for fine weather on the following day, which is a typical children's play in Japan. He believes that, be it sunny or rainy, one can find a playful moment of laughter. The vivid and animated character of hi s works adds warmth to inorganic and cold dental tools.
While raised in a dentist family and trained as a dentist as a profession, Ohata has been devoted to art since his youth. He came up with the idea of using dental tools as art in an alloy casting class during his junior year of college. Over fifty years, he has developed professionalism both in dentistry and art. This is his first solo exhibition in New York.
