Stefan smiled as he put the finishing touches on his plan.
The boarding house had been transformed until it was almost unrecognizable and he'd done a pretty great job of ushering in a festive atmosphere. He hoped it would set the mood and finally bring Damon and Bonnie together.
Stefan had taken a while to notice the way those two acted around each other. In fact, it was Caroline who had first pointed it out and Stefan couldn't stop seeing it now.
The only solution was to speed up the process and get them to stop dancing around each other before Stefan's head exploded due to the tension between them.
He stepped out of the living room and twisted the device in his hand until he heard a satisfying click.
Stefan once again congratulated himself on the ambiance of the room and his genius in tricking Bonnie into helping him with this plan.
He'd gone to her a week earlier in order to create something that would trap a person in a room. He'd claimed it was in case they encountered a rogue vampire, which was highly likely considering how jeopardy friendly they all were. It was almost too easy to get her to agree.
He tensed when he heard the front door open then relaxed as familiar footfalls sounded behind him.
"Whatever you do don't walk into the living room."
"Why?" Caroline asked.
"Because whoever walks in there won't be leaving for the next few hours," Stefan turned to her and chuckled.
"What did you do?"
"I helped."
"Meddled more like."
"It's purely for the greater good." Stefan defended.
"They're not going to thank you for this," Caroline shook her head but started to smile too.
"I'm hoping they'll be too busy with each other to thank me."
Caroline scrunched up her nose and shook her head, "Okay, please let's change the subject. I really don't want to think about my best friend and your brother doing...things...", she mock shuddered.
Stefan stepped closer, slipping the now active device on to the table next to them before wrapping his arms around Caroline's waist and pulling her towards him.
"Why don't we get out of here, go back to yours and see what...things," he emphasized, smirking, "we can get up to instead."
Caroline laughed and dragged him in for a kiss, "Race you!"
Stefan shook his head, amusement lighting up his face as Caroline's laughter echoed in the breeze. He gave her a few seconds head start before speeding after her.
"I'm going to kill your brother."
"I'll help."
"What was he thinking!?" Bonnie threw her hands up in frustration. None of the spells she'd tried had worked. She wasn't really surprised as she'd already known they wouldn't work having purposefully created the spell without any loopholes, but really, the magic should know those loopholes didn't include Bonnie herself dammit.
"We should probably ask him that before we kill him." Damon took another sip of his bourbon, content to relax. If anyone was going to get them out of this it was Bonnie.
Bonnie glared at Damon then crossed to the opposite side of the coffee table and sat down too.
"You said it would only last for 12 hours," Damon attempted to reassure her, "what's the worse that could happen?"
"With you?" Bonnie raised her eyebrows, "Where do you want me to start?"
"Ha ha ha."
She smiled mockingly and slouched back into the couch.
She managed to stay there for all of five minutes before she shot off the couch and started pacing again.
Damon rolled his eyes and tried to hold back a smile.
"Pacing won't help. You're just going to ruin my carpet." Damon sassed.
"It's helping me decide how I want to kill your brother." Bonnie threw back.
Damon stood up, laughing as he walked over to his decanters ready to fill his glass again. He paused, deciding to make this night a little more interesting. Winding Bonnie up had become a favourite activity of his recently.
There was something about an angry Bonnie that was intriguing to him.
"I think sometimes you can't decide whether you want to kill me or kiss me," Damon smirked, a challenging glint in his eye
"You're the last person on Earth I'd want to kiss." Bonnie scoffed. Her heart had jumped at the mention of kissing and she fought with her traitorous body, attempting to get it to realize that the words 'Damon' and 'kissing' should absolutely never be a cause for excitement. Disgust was much more appropriate.
"There was a time when I would have believed that." Damon abandoned his drink and started walking slowly towards her.
"And why don't you now?" Bonnie said, tilting her head back so she could maintain eye contact. She refused to back down no matter how much he tried to rattle her.
"I've learned how to read your heart when it's lying."
"You don't know anything about my heart," Bonnie's voice shook slightly but she still held her ground. How had this conversation spiralled out of her control so quickly? It was ridiculous how wrongfooted he could make her.
"I'd like to." The words slipped out of his mouth before he had a chance to second-guess himself. There had been a lot of moments between them lately where Damon thought she might be thinking about him the same way he'd been thinking about her for months.
It had taken him by surprise at first. She was a good ally to have in battle and she was very rapidly becoming his best friend but there was also something more to their interactions. Maybe tonight was the perfect opportunity to find out just what that 'more' was.
Bonnie swallowed and stepped back, dropping her gaze and cursing herself as she gave up ground but needing the space so she could catch her breath and think. "Stop messing around, Damon."
"I'm being completely serious," Damon attempted to get her to see how sincere he was and tried to catch her eyes but she seemed to be determined to keep them on the floor.
"Tell me you're not even a little bit interested and I'll let this go and we'll never mention it again." Damon probed, dropping his guard even more as he raised one of his hands to gently cup her cheek and bring her head up.
Bonnie let out a quiet gasp as she felt his hand on her face, flicking her eyes up to meet his in shock and trying desperately to understand what this was as she searched his eyes for answers.
"Bonnie."
Her heart sped up as the utterance of her name from his lips tugged at the emotions she'd fought so hard to ignore.
Damon moved his face a few inches closer until their foreheads were brushing slightly.
"Please."
She didn't know what the question was but suddenly the only answer she'd ever had for him was 'Yes'.
Bonnie closed the remaining distance between their lips and hesitantly pressed hers against his.
Damon was much less hesitant but surprised Bonnie when he kissed her back softly, almost as though he was worried he'd scare her off.
He dropped his hand from her cheek and wrapped both arms around her waist, tugging her closer and deepening the kiss until Bonnie's head was spinning.
The elation Damon felt in his chest at that moment almost brought him to his knees as he realized that this, this feeling, this moment, this incredible woman, was exactly what he'd been searching for since before he'd turned.
He'd thought he'd found love with Katherine but that had been youthful ignorance. With Elena, it had been an obsession and a longing to prove his continued existence meant something.
With Bonnie, it was simply peace. A belonging as his lips moved effortlessly with hers.
As they both separated slightly, panting and almost giddy with the realization of new possibilities, Bonnie revised her plans for Stefan.
It was the season of giving after all and this gift had been pretty great so far.
The phone buzzed on the bedside table and Stefan opened his tired eyes.
He glanced down and the sleeping beauty currently draped warmly across his chest and smiled happily.
The phone buzzed again, indicating a new text message and reminding him of what had woken him up.
He picked it up and opened the message.
Thank you.
Stefan grinned, sent back a quick 'You're welcome' and placed his phone back on the table.
I really enjoy the teasers and love seeing where they fit into the fic. I definitely don't think they spoil the experience and I know that I'm often surprised as to exactly where they fit in. Do you ever post a teaser and then think 'damn it, this would work better in chapter 27'? Have you ever sneakily deleted a teaser because you realised it wouldn't fit? Enjoy you holiday.
hahaha I think you mentioned once (a while back) that you go into a chapter ready to see how much you predicted correctly and how much ends up going in a different direction and I loved that! Thanks, babe. Glad it doesn’t diminish it for you either. Re: the teasers, lmaaaaao not that badly yet, though I’ve definitely posted teasers that end up being pushed to the next chapter because I end up splitting the one I’m writing. I’ve also tweaked the hell out of them before so that they’re substantially different in the actual fic. But so far no major screw ups with the teasers!
Though speaking of deleted scenes that won’t fit, I was scouring through my docs to find a scene I edited out of like 13 to put into 16 and I realized the sheer amount of cut scenes I have from this fic. Like it’s unbelievable. Pro-tip to all the writers out there - write your goddamn chapters in chronological order it will save you so much time on unused writing. -Sincerely, the girl currently writing 16 completely backwards. Literally, I started with the last scene and currently have the last three done. And I’m probably going to have to edit the fuck out of them when they end up making no sense with what comes before them.
Came for the Bonnie Bennett love, stayed for the crazy mix of intellectual discourse and trash ships (I tried to watch Taboo, I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one who thought it was complete tripe!)
aww, thank you so much, u humble me
RIGHT, that show took us all for a ride. i honestly felt betrayed since i had stanned it so hard in its beginnings. oh well, once burnt twice shy (meaning, tom hardy, i dont trust u anymore)
For @jads1000, a terrible enabler! :) This was written as a continuation of You Can't Scare Me.
Violet awoke with a gasp, a sudden fear enveloping her as she couldn't place her surroundings. With her mind still muddy after the transition, it took her a few moments to recognize the strange bedroom Caroline had led her to. She was dead, with only a former pageant queen to protect her from herself. Perhaps she should have been more wary of the vampire welcoming her into her home, but Violet wasn't about to turn down blood bags and a fabulous bathroom.
A sound from said bathroom spooked her, though, and Violet clutched the covers to her chest as she waited for someone to kill her again. When no threat came, she slowly got out of bed and padded toward the opulent room where an unexpected sight surprised her. "Caroline?"
The older vampire was scrubbing the tiled floor on her hands and knees, literally using a toothbrush to get into the crevices. "I couldn't sleep," Caroline explained without looking back. Her movements were jerky, like she had too much adrenaline running through her veins. "Stress cleaning seemed like a good idea. I started with my bathroom, mostly because I hadn't touched Stefan's cabinet since- Well, anyway, there was so much dust that I had to pitch two bottles of hair gel that were all gunked up with the stuff. Of course, he has a thousand more options still in there, so I'm sure he won't be too mad when he comes- Um, yeah, so I finished my bathroom and thought about leaving you here with Damon's and needed to clean some more. I mean, it's disinfected, I have cleaned since he left. But still," her rambling finally broke as she shuddered dramatically. "Cooties."
Violet watched as Caroline kept scrubbing and rambling about her murderer's hair products, and the conversation she overheard earlier came flooding back. A bad feeling froze in her spine when the dots finally connected in horror.
When Violet didn't answer, Caroline turned to see the girl shifting uncomfortably. Her eyebrows immediately furrowed in concern. "What's wrong?" she asked, standing to get a better look at her expression. The girl didn't seem scared, but Caroline wanted to be sympathetic. "You're safe, I promise."
"I know," Violet answered easily, squeezing her middle with her crossed arms. Caroline waited for her to continue, giving an encouraging nod when she seemed unsure. "I just don't get it. You're so nice, and you're taking care of me. But, were you really going to marry the guy that killed me?"
Smiling sadly, Caroline removed the rubber gloves she had been wearing. "He's the one who took care of me when I first turned." Caroline's expression turned wistful as she remembered. "Vampires can grow detached from their humanity over time, but we also have the ability to flip that humanity off altogether. Stefan without his...it's just really bad and he's not like his normal self. My Stefan is kind, and heroic. He protected me when no one else did."
"He wasn't the one to turn you?"
"No," Caroline snorted. "I was killed by a real bitch, the same one who turned Stefan and his brother, Damon. She left me to wake up alone and scared in a hospital, not knowing what was happening or how to deal. There were...bad memories, and this incredible hunger I didn't know how to feed."
She paused, and Violet was desperate for details. "What happened?"
Caroline licked her lips, bracing herself. "Damon, whose room we're in, tried to kill me. I was a loose end, you see." Her voice dripped with self-deprecation, a hollow reminder of the girl she once was. Then, a small smile came to her face. "Stefan saved me, and he taught me how to be a vampire, a good one."
Her smile brightening, Caroline's hands landed triumphantly on her hips. "And now, I'm going to teach you."
She flashed away, and Violet was still a little disoriented with the open display of vampirism. Her new and improved senses could hear the blonde rummaging around downstairs, though she couldn't place the noise exactly. Quieter and faster than she could believe, Caroline returned suddenly; Violet jumped in surprise.
"Sorry," Caroline winced, holding up bottles of wine, pretzels, and ice cream in conciliation. "Vampire 101 starts with sublimation through food and booze."
Violet greedily reached for wine, though Caroline pulled it back with a raised finger in severity. "As a mother, I feel the need to warn you about the dangers of underage drinking." At Violet's kicked puppy look, however, Caroline felt her resolve weaken. "But, you also died today, so maybe you've earned a drink or two."
Stefan sat on the roof, listening in to the girls chattering away in Damon's bedroom. He really had left when Caroline sent him away, but he felt the most annoying tug to return to the boarding house after grabbing a blonde to eat.
He finally rid Damon of the damned necklace, only for the ring in his pocket to feel like a stone weighing him down. It was all her fault, and Stefan idly noted that he let her dig under his skin. Still, he couldn't help but frown when her laugh seemed dampened.
Absently, Stefan pulled the ring from his pocket, twisting it between his fingers as he contemplated Miss Forbes' plan. Maybe a bit naive and optimistic for the Ripper, but she always had been a better manipulator than they gave her credit. Just because he knew he was being manipulated, though, it didn't make him less susceptible to her efforts. Worse, he was tempted to test her limits in kind.
Distracting, that was the word for her.
Even as she giggled over snacks and wine with her new protege, Caroline had no idea she had already delayed his plans until morning. Stefan could very easily drop the ring and flash away, but there he sat.
Damon was right, the Ripper was satisfying Cade just fine with his killing sprees. He had certainly earned a night to pause and listen to the girl who threw his ring back in his face.
He was sure her harsh words and light laughter with someone who wasn't him would be out of his system by morning.
Ok this is going to sound random, but sometimes when I look at gifsets of SDCC, Paul and Kat remind me of SMA Daroline taking the mick out of/laughing at Stefan (Ian). Do you think Paul could play SMA!Damon or is he just too Stefan? And Kat as Care?
HAHA I can totally see that, how funny. TBH I feel like Paul can play whatever he wants - he’s a fantastic actor when he’s vested. Might take some adjusting to given how strongly I tie him with Stefan (and I think he might just naturally fit Stefan a bit more), but he could probs pull off SMA!Damon, too. I think Paul originally auditioned for Damon on the show, now that I think about it? But yeah, in terms of SMA!Damon, he can definitely do the blithe swagger/glittery-eyed wit:
And re: Kat as Caroline, lmaaaaao probably, it’s just so mindfucky to think about. It’d definitely be SUPER fun to see her play a vulnerable mean girl with a heart of gold, though - I feel like so much more of her sass could come out. Granted, Bonnie’s a pretty sassy role in this fic, too. LMAO I’m so confused. But yeah, I mean, them playing switched up roles would be a ton of fun!
Omg chapter 17 is here baby and it's 36k long! Bloody hell, I'm so glad I'm off work this week. Prepare for a massive review hitting your inbox soon. Mwah! Enjoy Puerto Rico x
@jads1000 thanks :) wasn't as nervous this time but still was horrible. hopefully in a couple of months after I've recovered it'll be third time lucky 😂
jads1000 replied to your post:
Good luck! The UK test is really tough. Most people fail the 1st attempt.
Thanks! Yeah I failed the first time a couple of months ago. I wouldn’t say I was a really bad driver the nerves just got the better of me and I freaked out and ruined part of it, nothing serious but enough to fail. The fact I’ve already done it once and I know what it’s like now is helping slightly, but I just wanna get it over with :(
