I'm so sorry - but glad you all had each other for hugs/comfort. May their name be for a blessing.

*big big hugs*
Thank you guys. I’m a bit of a mess, but my troupe directors have it worse -- they have to inform the rest of the students. I’m going to stop in class this week to help out and organize whatever we decide to do as a studio. It’s been a multiple cupcake sort of day.
What advice would you give someone who wants to become a zookeeper?
With the caveat that I am not a zookeeper, but I’ve heard them answer this question a lot and heard about how they got where they are...
Get in early. As a teenager if possible. Be a volunteer, get a job in retail, food service, wherever you can at the zoo. Get yourself in the door. Then try to get an intern position or a seasonal position (LOADS of the current FT staff began as seasonals, it’s almost the primary route in). Zookeeper positions are rare and there is a lot of demand. Study something related to animal husbandry or zoology if you want but it’s not a requirement - one of our keepers studied psych and anthro. But I can’t stress enough how important it seems to be to get yourself employed by a zoo asap.
With that said, when I became a docent they were VERY emphatic that volunteering like that is NOT a route to FT zoo employment - then again most docents and adult volunteers are already employed or retired.

it's okay, imposter complex is real and it fucking sucks. BUT, remember this: if a mediocre white man can think he can do it, YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO IT. Go in there and slay.
So I’d never heard of “imposter complex” before today, but def nice to have a name to put to the suckage. And lol, thank you! I’m going to put that on a poster behind my new office door, to help inspire me when my door is closed :p

talking to someone is probably a good idea. but you will be great. <333
Thank you, bb! I chickened out at the very last moment when it came to trying to book something, but I’ve made a note in my calendar to contact my Employee Assistance Program when I get in tomorrow, because this is just getting ridiculous.

You can do it. And believe me, it's a lot harder to fool interviewers than people think. Especially since you already work for the place

Yeah, there's no way you could have fooled people in an interview when you already work there. You've heard of imposter syndrome, right? Your brain is lying to you, you deserve this <3
Thank you, guys! In my head I know it’s harder to fool people, especially ones that see me everyday, but even in my current job, I’ve felt like a fraud every time my boss compliments me. And I know that in my work place, reputations can def precede you and my rep here is pretty good, but the more my new boss kept bringing up “fooling people in interviews” I was def feeling very “Is he talking about me???” by the end of the day.

you are fabulous and you will be fabulous <3
You are super and I <3 you. Thank you, bb!
Lori, after seeing you reblog that Toby Stephens post, I just have to make sure that you're aware of the perfection that is Black Sails, a beautifully produced tv show about pirates with amazing representation of well-developed badass women, including WOC, bi and gay characters, poly relationships and even a main character with a physical disability. This show doesn't get anywhere near the attention it deserves! :)
That show is definitely On The List, but I swear I am like 8000 shows/films behind and I can barely keep up with the shows I already watch.
Executive dysfunction question (if you're up for it): you said you don't use google calendar, is there something else you use that helps you with getting shit done? Cheers <3
Good old Pencil and Paper! I use an Inkwell Press Planner and grocery list notepad (referral link). Either Sunday or Monday, I sit down and write out what I have going on that week if it isn’t already listed and go over what plans I already have. The act of writing things down helps me remember more.
I also put in my husbands known appointments because he can’t remember that stuff either.
I’m also working on writing when I pay bills and my meal plans. But that’s slower going.
I write a lot of lists. Short and broken down lists, and usually post them here on tumblr.
I’m working on structuring my free time a bit more. I keep my weekdays as mostly downtime, so I do most stuff on the weekends. Saturday is for random errands, shopping, relaxing/socializing, picking up in the master bedroom. Sunday is groceries, meal prepping, dance.
I also indulge in a yummy breakfast that has to bake on Sunday mornings, and I’m using that time to do a quick clean of the main floor, wipe down the kitchen. I’m working on when to do the bathroom now too.
Basically, I’m trying to find a good structural balance like I have at work, and apply it to the rest of my life. It’s gradually improving, I think.
Kates, do you have any advice on dealing with a negative body image? And more specifically, accepting the level of 'femininity' you can be bothered to perform and not beating yourself up for not doing more? No problem if you don't, you're just really inspirational and awesome and I figured it couldn't hurt to ask :)
I’ve been thinking about this since I got it -- and it’s a hard question because I’ve been struggling with my body image lately too (I’ve been at the gym, but my weight has gone up. So my calves look fantastic, but not much definition happening elsewhere). But it’s a work in progress, loving your body, and right now I’m trying to focus on what my body can do instead of how it appears. But that’s me, and not your struggle. I am going assume, that you are like me, and have never felt like you were anything other than a woman.I’ve been through a lot of phases when it comes to femininity. My mother says that she prayed and prayed for a little girl, and after she had me, learned to be more specific in her prayers. I’ve never been girly. I’ve never cared too much for dresses, or frills. I still cannot figure out how to curl my hair right.
And it used to bug me a lot. And even now, when I buy clothes, I have to ask myself, Is this what I like? Or what I think I’m expected to like? Does this make me feel like I’m playing dress up in my own skin?
Frankly, being “feminine” is a shit-ton of emotional labor, executive function, and money all rolled together. It’s difficult and requires a lot of skill and time to perform. And if you aren’t naturally inclined to enjoy it, it’s even more difficult.
Femininity is a spectrum, really. I think we just have to find our point on it. I like makeup, but I’m never going to be all that great at it. I like dressing well, but I’m probably never going to wear dresses all that often. I like flats over heels. I’m more comfortable baring cleavage than my legs. I’m never going to take more than 10 minutes to do my hair, but I may put extensions in it. I am never going to be the woman that remembers to send cards on everyones birthday or organize food days at work. But I like feeding people and making sure people are happy at dinner parties.
There’s no wrong way to express yourself as a woman, so long as you are expressing you.
But it may also be that maybe, feminine isn’t the gender expression/presentation that makes you happy. In that case, I’m not the best resource, and would direct you towards genderqueer resources.
Hi, nice to meet you, your blog is excellent (that’s me who just spent the last hour liking all your Star Trek posts). Just wondering if you have an AO3, or fics somewhere else that I might be able to check out? Cheers LLAP 🖖
Hi hello, thank you! We have fun here. I have good news and bad news lol. I'm kitain on Ao3, and I write! However, not Star Trek U_U mostly on account of the fixation on my fellas... (although they do have a Star Trek presence lol). If you're attached to War College Kyle, you may be interested to know that he is a reincarnation of yeoman Jason Tiner, and perhaps I can convince you to watch JAG? I think we are dangerously close to writing something about Kyle tho lol....
Failing all that, I'm always happy to yap! I have many opinions!
