Jae Yong Kim “Without my intention, references to Pop Art have been a consistent occurrence throughout the entirety of the donut artworks. Questioning myself regarding the donuts falling in line with a specific genre has brought questions and need for understanding. Each individual donut has invariably read to me as a small painting; colour, pattern and physicality have been the ultimate procedure for my personal expression.” - Jae Yong Kim, Ceramic Artist. South Korean ceramicist Jae Yong Kim creates deliciously glazed donuts out of clay, glitter and Swarovski crystals. The faux desserts present a glossy perfection in their paint application, yet contain an irregularity in shape to trick the eye into believing they might be an edible treat. Kim chooses patterns and images that evoke a sense of pop culture both past and present, with several pieces imitating the style of famous painters such as the splattered marks of Jackson Pollack or concentric dots of Yayoi Kusama. These references, alongside their presentation as food, ask the audience to consider what they are really consuming when viewing his small, spherical works. Whether it’s glittering galaxy glazes or adorable animal-inspired icing designs, it’s evident that donuts make the perfect shaped canvas for food-inspired artists around the world. Influenced by his time spent living in the United States, South Korean ceramicist Kim creates delectable donut designs inspired by pop culture and famous artworks. References to modern art has been a continuous theme for Kim, who has hand-sculpted hundreds of ceramic donuts glazed in brightly coloured patterns. Each piece can take days to create, with the glazing process requiring three or four firings in the kiln to achieve the glossy finish. @jae_yong_kim_nyc #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #jaeyongkim #ceramicist #artist #clay #donuts #swarovskicrystals #glitter #popart #yayoikusama #jacksonpollack #southkorea #jerseycity (at Jersey City, New Jersey)
Jae Yong Kim Kim was born in South Korea in 1973 and at the age of three moved to Kuwait when his father was relocated as a regional director there of a construction company and lived with his family in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia for a total of five years. Kim spent most of his adolescence and youth in Seoul, South Korea, until he graduated high school and went alone to the United States in 1994 to pursue a university degree. Kim’s early experience of mobility and his move to the U.S. informs the concerns in his work - which is rooted to his desire to understand and find his identity and the meaning of the ‘Home.’ Kim explores these issues through the use of a surrogate subject in his work, such as his dog Momo and snails. He is recognised and noticed for his quirky, eclectic and humorous renditions of these subjects and for his ability to create a relatable language for the viewer in order to deal with human issues such as cruelty, pain, anguish, joy, love and friendship. Kim attended and received his ‘Bachelors of Fine Arts’ (in Ceramics and Sculpture) at the ‘Hartford Art School’ at the ‘University of Hartford’ and his ‘Masters of Fine Arts in Ceramics’ at ‘Cranbrook Academy of Art’ in Michigan. Kim splits his time between Korea and New York and works form a studio in Jersey City, NJ. Awalnya dia protes. Protes besar-besaran 😂 Namun demi mendapatkan semua fasilitas yg pernah dimilikinya lagi seperti mobil, kartu kredit, atm, apartemen, dll, akhirnya dia bekerja juga sebagai pelayan 😂😂 Dari itulah dia bertemu dengan seorang gadis cantik. Putri mantan artis film dewasa.

Jae Yong Kim - Pop Goes the Donut
Lyons Wier Gallery
Last year Jae Kim had just a small corner in this gallery this year he’s got the whole place. Michael Lyons Wier told me that the artist had at one time found solace in donuts while going through a difficult period in his life. The gallery walls filled with these beautifully crafted donuts is impressive.
