Jaffa cheesecake - for my daughter's birthday. Bit of an experiment: cocoa mixed into the malt biscuit crust, grated orange zest in the cheese mixture, dabs of sweet orange marmalade at the bottom, next to the crust. Random Jaffas sprinkled immediately after removed from oven. Probably won't bother with the planned dark chocolate swirl.
.
When shops run out of the Kiwi favourite there will be no more packets to buy.
Well that’s it, pack it up, we had a good run, New Zealand’s over.
I haven’t personally eaten a Jaffa in years but I wanted them to still be there, like a house you grew up in.

SHORELINE HOTEL: soft serve ice cream with chocolate topping and lollies. Yummmm, love reverting back to childhood and eating soft serve ice cream with loads of chocolate topping and even better, topped with Jaffa’s, chocolate buds, smarties and freckles. Thoroughly enjoyed this decadent dessert. #dessert #icecream #softserveicecream #jaffas #smarties #freckles #foodporn #foodphotos #foodphotography #hobartfood #hobartfoodgirl #chocolatetopping #shorelinehotel #delicious #sweet (at Shoreline Hotel) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvY1qRYBmJn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uq3bwj8kd8dc
Settling into Edinburgh
This is along my route to uni everyday. The cliffs you can see through the houses are part of an extinct volcano.
The red circle shows where Arthur’s Seat is. Arthur’s Seat is the highest point of the extinct volcano.
I could see the castle from here, on the right hand side. Also on the right bottom corner (the jagged cliff) is the Salisbury Crags. I didn’t get the chance to walk along them, but I hope to next time.
This is the view from the peak next to Arthur’s Seat, which is slightly lower. On the left you can see the meadows. I live off the bottom left corner of it. In the middle is the main campus of the University of Edinburgh, and on the right is Edinburgh Castle.
22/1/19 - 28/1/19
This week I stayed in Edinburgh. As I settled into the academic side of life here, I also wanted to embrace the social side of the University. The uni has over 280 societies, and I decided to join two of them: the Creative Writing Society and the Craft and Sewing Society. I’ve always wanted to join a creative writing society at home, but never had the courage. Now I’m on exchange, I thought why not? And, I was keen to spend time with people who enjoy writing as much as I do. Joining the Craft Society was more about meeting new people, and as a stress reliever. Interestingly, the craft society is the only place I’ve been so far where the majority of people there are from the UK or Ireland. This first week in craft, we made scrunchies. Mine was not great, since I haven’t sewed in a long time, but it does the job, and I was wearing it a lot this week.
There were also a couple of big holidays celebrated this week. The first being Burns Night, and the second of course being Australia Day. Burns Night marks the birthday of Robert Burns, a famous Scottish poet, who died in 1796. Burns Night is like the Scottish equivalent of Australia Day, and is used as a way to celebrate Scottish history and identity. People hold a Burns supper around the 25th of January. At the supper, people eat haggis, neeps (mashed swedes) and tatties (mashed potatoes), and drink Scotch whisky. People also recite the work of Robert Burns. The dinners can be formal or informal, and there were lots of Burns Night events going on this weekend. Unfortunately I was not able to attend a supper, but it was interesting to learn about. It makes me think what an Australian version of this would look like. Would we celebrate the work of Banjo Patterson? Just an idea.
On Saturday, I didn’t do much for Australia Day. The night before, I went out to a Swedish party, which played popular songs from and in Sweden, including ABBA! So the next day I was very tired. I went on the hunt for some non-American chocolates or biscuits I could find at home. Unfortunately all I could find was Cadbury, which is made slightly different in the UK to Australia. They have interesting biscuits here. At the Writing Society, they provide biscuits each week, and ones called Jammie Dodgers are always first to run out. The second that UK people really like, which I can’t understand, are called Jaffa Cakes. They have this bottom layer crossed between a cake and a biscuit, and a top layer of chocolate. They have a choc-orange taste, but to be honest, Allens Jaffas are WAY better! Sorry for the rant about lollies.
Anyway, I’m sure you’ll find the most interesting thing about this post is my trip to Arthur’s Seat on Monday. I had been wanting to climb Arthur’s Seat ever since I got to Edinburgh. Its very close to where I live - about a 20 minute walk to the base of it. The aerial view of Edinburgh is interesting, because it actually encompasses the extinct volcano. From The Meadows you can often see the silhouettes of people walking along the ridge and on top of Arthur’s Seat itself.
I had been waiting for a day where the sun was out, to get the best view, and the best photos. Monday was quite chilly, but otherwise the perfect day! The hike was quite short; in total about 2 hours. I accidentally took the steepest path to the top, but it was very picturesque. Even though it was a Monday, there were lots of people walking and running around Holyrood Park, and up the hill. I also couldn’t believe how many gorgeous dogs there were being taken for a walk up the peak. The gorgeous girl I photographed was such a gentle thing, and was so cute, carrying her soccer ball all the way to the top! From Arthur’s Seat, you can see the whole city. It was really cold and windy, but a stunning view. I will definitely climb Arthur’s Seat again before I leave.
