Jaimeo Brown Live Concert and Talk

On October 13, the talented Jaimeo Brown came to the Cambridge community center accompanied by guitarist Chris Scholar and saxophonist Jaleel Shaw to talk about his upcoming album, Transcendence. Jaimeo showcased a few songs from the album which highlighted the theme of the work as a whole. Jaimeo and his team took old sound samples and remixed them into modern jazz singles, making them more palatable to new age jazz fans. I am very lucky to be able to partake in the Concert in Closed Quarters program sponsored by the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the Arts Scholars program and be introduced to Brown’s music. Being exposed to new genre’s that I would not usually go out of my way to listen to really broadened my horizons and tastes.

The “Concerts in Closed Quarters featuring Jaimeo Brown” provided an intimate setting for me to hear new and captivating music from a very creative artist. Jaimeo and his band mates were very interactive with the audience, sharing their experiences and asking thought provoking questions, actively involving everyone in the process. I appreciated Jaimeo’s ultimate goal of wanting the audience to take something from their performance. I loved the smaller environment because it established a deeper connection between the music, the performers and me/the audience, it made the entire experience all the more powerful. The music was amazing, Jaimeo Brown and his friends/band mates truly proved their talent and gained a new fan.

Jaimeo Brown Transcendence - Mean World Remix (feat. Carl Craig and Q-Tip)

On Friday, January 8th, Jaimeo Brown Transcendence will be performing at SOBs in NYC for the 2017 Winter JazzFest!

Check out the video for the remix to the track "Mean World", from Jaimeo Brown Transcendence's self-titled debut album, which features techno/jazz/producer Carl Craig and A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip.

As Jaimeo very well puts it, “The word ‘jazz’ to me is a frame of reference.  Its connotation is so diverse that I'm not too emotional about the word. In my view Transcendence is a movement, a protest and the sharpest tool that I know of to create change for black lives.”

The message and diverse sounds of this track perfectly unify Jaimeo’s vision and voice in his musical efforts to promote social change.

Jaimeo Brown Transcendence - Be So Glad

Because I always work with so many tabs open, I happens that two play music at the same time. It doesn’t always result in noise, strangely enough - but that may also be a “déformation professionelle” of a jazz musician always looking for ever stranger sounds of course. It happened quite a few times that I loved parts of these running parallels so much that I tried to capture them while they lasted.

With Jaimeo Brown’s “Be So Glad”, it wasn’t a fleeting moment, it was meant like that, a spiritual with a jazz band slowly coming in and out of focus, reharmonizing what’s there without destroying it. This track, the whole album actually (”work songs”, released in february) is truly amazing, and something very new. 

Jaimeo Brown (*1978) is a New York based jazz drummer & composer who played with the all the cats from Wynton Marsalis to Kenny Garrett or the Mingus Big Band. He says himself that with this project, he found “a life’s worth of work”.
