Jake's relationship with the Christian God is so complicated. He grew up Catholic: Mass with Marie every Saturday, went to Catholic school till high school, still carries the rosary Marie gave him when he left for boot camp, still says a Hail Mary when shit hits the fan and his back is against the wall.
But also.
"God is real because my mom believes in him"
but also "God isn't real because how could he be"
but also "if god is real and he let this happen, he's not a god I would ever believe in"
but also "I want hell to be real because I want every son of a bitch that did this to suffer for eternity"
but also "if hell is real, do I deserve to go there for what I've done too?"
God does and doesn't exist, hell does and doesn't exist, the concept of salvation does and doesn't exist.
He's seen hell, he's looked demons in the eye and knows they look like men and die like them too, and there can't be a merciful god that would allow this level of suffering and death on such a widespread scale.
But his mom has the purest faith of anyone he knows, and he has faith in her, and that faith carries him through, and that has to mean something too, so he goes to Mass when he goes home to visit, and doesn't say a word against it because it means something to her, and that means the world to him.
