Here’s a bit I wrote about my Ryder brothers and Kyle Shepard as teenagers.
“I don’t think we should be doing this,” Kyle said with a frown on his face.
“Why not? It’s totally harmless.” Jake nudged Kyle playfully. Kyle didn’t seem happy about the way things were going.
“Come on, have some fun, Kyle.” Tyrus was holding a bag of fish they had got earlier. He held the bag in front of Kyle. “You’ll get the honor of dumping these.”
“Uh, I don’t think I will.”
Tyrus took a step toward Kyle and he had to take a step back. He was getting dangerously close to the pool in the middle of the plaza. “Would you like to take a swim instead?”
Tyrus took one more step and Kyle stumbled back. He went down with a splash. Jake and Tyrus high-fived as Kyle attempted to get up and out of the pool. He tugged on Tyrus’ arm and he fell into the pool with the fish. Jake was laughing at his brother but stopped when Tyrus splashed some water on him.
Their fun was cut short when they saw a couple of C-sec officers approach. Jake tried to run away but got stopped by the turian with pink markings. “Don’t even think about it.” Jake stopped. He hovered next to the pool while the other two were still in the pool and seemed to have decided not to move. Tyrus probably did it to be rebellious but Kyle seemed totally mortified. Like he had done something really awful and unforgivable.
The other turian didn’t seem amused. “I’m not fishing them out. You do it.”
“Ugh, fine. I’ll do it but you’re buying lunch.”
“Lucilus you just want me to pay you cheap bastard.”
“Either you help or pay Garrus.”
“Hey, get out of there now. You’re not supposed to be there.”
“We fell in accidentally while trying to get our fish back.” Tyrus had a sheepish smile on his face but he didn’t fool the two turians.
“I know you well enough to know you're up to no good,” Garrus said. “Now get out of there.”
Tyrus held out a hand and when Kyle took it he helped him up. They walked to the others. Jake looked amused behind the turians' backs. "Pretty fun isn't it Kyle?"
"Well the fun is done now. You need to come with us to the station." Garrus seemed amused by the boys' reactions. Jake and Tyrus were quiet now. Kyle looked like he had seen a ghost. Like it was a big deal. They'd be out of the station in no time. These turians were nothing compared to their dad anyway. He'd be pissed to be called to the station again. No doubt the other boy would have no trouble getting out as well.
They walked to the station. Jake and Tyrus joked around as Kyle followed them with a big frown on his face. "What's wrong Kyle?"
Kyle didn't look at Jake when he answered. "I haven't been in trouble before."
"This isn't a big deal. Our parents will get us soon. And tomorrow we'll be laughing at this."
Kyle didn't look convinced. "Yeah, maybe that's how it works for you guys."
Jake was about to ask him what he meant but was interrupted by Garrus. "You really need to stop ending up here. Don't you have anything better to do?"
“Not really. Besides the Presidium needs some more action.” Tyrus high-fived his brother.
Kyle was quiet. Jake wondered what he was thinking. He was a mystery to him. He had just appeared on the Citadel one day. They had started to hang out together a while ago but they still didn’t know anything about him. Kyle didn’t seem like a guy who talked about his past with anyone.
