On the subject of Evfra's abducted family
So, I'm replaying meA and I've run into a thought...
What classifies as an Angaran family? Is it just the immediate parents and children? They're stated to have large families because they have multiple mothers (and presumably multiple fathers?), which results in a lot of siblings. But, then Jaal mentions cousins living with him (if I remember correctly), or is this the best translation for family members who are your second dad's kids with your second mother, in the same sense humans refer to extended family members as aunt/uncle despite them not being directly parents siblings.
Now, this is important, because how it relates to Evfra. His whole "my family was rounded up by the Kett" has layers of implications because, either:
His immediate family of parents, and siblings were taken, and that's what Angara classify as family, but he'd still (likely) have grandparents, aunts and uncles
Everyone in his family was taken, kinda implying the grandparents live with the parents, making the houses even larger then. Or, at least, they live really close together, which makes one question how does housing work. Do they rotate houses one someone dies? Can new houses be built? What happens when old houses have no one to live in? We see plenty of houses on Havaral, Voeld, and Aya, and none look especially large. At least, not enough to house multigenerational households
His spouses and children were taken, and Angara consider only their descendants and partners to be "family" (in the sense that he doesn't mention having other living relatives, and does stress all of his family was taken). But, he'd still have living parents and siblings.
Given that we don't see any Angaran or Kett "children", I find it unlikely that the Kett abducted any children. Easier to wait for their prey to grow first, before transforming them, so you don't have to take care of a newly-Kett infant. This is largely supported by Jaal's sister-in-law and older brother being taken by the Kett, but not their children. So, to me, the 3rd has actually become the least likely explanation.
Could this be a case of multiple Kett abductions? Yes. But the way he phrases the comment feels like they were taken all at once, and he couldn't do anything to stop them. Which, kinda, in a way, feels like he was in a powerless position, either a kid or a teenager, and well-hidden. That he knew it was the Kett. Or, he was actively fighting the Kett already as an unorganized resistance member, which doesn't seem likely, given how he "came to glory" post-tragedy.
His family were abducted 10 years prior to the Nexus arrival, he unified the resistance 4 years pre-Nexus arrival. A 6 year rise to fame seems pretty likely for someone who would have started with no skills. If he was a seasoned fighter prior to his family being abducted, I feel like the unification would have been earlier, just given how word would spread about one guy being a) good at leading b) good at fighting Kett c) driven like someone lit a fire under his arse.
Also the ten years of silence, alongside the some of the Kett being transformed Angara, implies that during his time in the resistance he might have been the man responsible (if not holding the gun, then giving the orders) for his family's death.
Maybe I'm thinking too much about an abandoned 9 year old game...
But, I think it's likely that when Evfra talks about all his family, he means parents and siblings, rather than spouse and kids. Especially since, notably, the Kett don't seem to take kids. Which means to me that Evfra was likely young (possibly a kid) when his older siblings and parents were taken, or at least, young enough to pass for an Angaran kid and have the Kett pass him over. Though, anything younger than 16 is a bit of a stretch, as that would make him 26 during the game, and he definitely reads a tad bit older than Jaal. Who is 27. Timelines with this game are hard.
