it’s known around campus that whatever jake wants, he gets. whether it’s homework answers, party invites, a spot on a sports team, or a girl’s heart.

after class one day, he snuck up behind you, giving his friends that eyebrow raise before turning his attention fully on you. you barely gave him any notice. that was the moment something switched in him.
a few days later in math, he slid into the seat right next to you instead of his usual spot in the back. you tried your best to ignore him. you’d heard all the stories about jake from other girls, and you had zero interest in being the next one.
he tapped his pencil on the desk like he was pretending to follow the lesson, then eventually turned his whole body toward you, resting his chin on his hand. “so are you gonna ignore me the whole lesson?”
you kept your eyes glued to your paper, scribbling notes. “yeah,” you said flatly. “i’ve got better things to do.” you finally glanced over at him.
“ouch,” he replied, playfully clutching his chest. you couldn’t help the tiny smile that slipped out. of course he noticed. “oh, so you do smile?”
“i mean yeah, i’m human,” you said jokingly.
“mm,” he hummed, a little smile playing on his lips. “we should probably get to writing down notes, huh?”
“i have been,” you shot back, pointing your pen at his completely blank paper. “it’s you who needs to write them down.”
when the lesson finally ended, you were packing your notebook into your bag when jake stood up to leave. right before he walked off, he looked back at you. “you have a pretty smile. you should smile more.”
he was gone before you could respond. you wanted to act like his words had no effect on you, but they did.
later that night, around 12am, you were lying on the bottom bunk in your dorm while your roommate was trying to sleep on the top. you couldn’t stop thinking about him.
“i feel like he put some spell on me,” you whispered. “i had zero interest and then all of a sudden…” you made a little poof sound with your hands.
“maybe he’s a wizard,” your roommate mumbled.
“now you’re just pulling stuff out of your ass,” you laughed softly.
“just get some sleep, okay? we have a long day tomorrow,” she said, already half gone.
“okay, but—” before you could finish, she was already snoring.
you groaned and pulled your pillow over your face, heart still doing stupid little flips every time you replayed his voice saying you had a pretty smile. you hated how much you kept thinking about it.
it was the next day in math. jake was already there when you walked in, which was shocking since he was usually late. you sat down and he looked at you the whole time.
“you aren’t going to mention anything?” he asked.
“what, that you’re earlier than me?”
“yeah.”
“i wasn’t going to mention it, but i noticed,” you said, trying your best to sound nonchalant. jake saw right through you.
he sat up straighter in his seat. “are you single?”
“does it matter?” you asked.
“well, i don’t wanna talk to someone else’s girl.”
“like you haven’t done that before,” you said.
“that was a while back,” he replied.
“mm, right.”
“so are you?” he asked, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow slightly.
“yeah, why do you wanna know?”
“’cause i wanna ask you out.”
“on a date?” you said.
he nodded. “on saturday.”
you waited a second before responding. “i’ll think about it.”
“that’s fine. here’s my number.” he showed it to you and you typed it in.
as he walked out of class he called back with full confidence, “see you saturday!”
later that evening, you were talking to your dorm mate again, this time at a more reasonable hour. she was in the shower with the curtain closed while you sat on the bathroom countertop.
“so are you going on the date?” she asked.
“probably not. i mean i just met him.”
your friend was smiling behind the curtain, already knowing that was bullshit. “hm, okay.”
saturday approached, and you got a text from jake.
“so are coming to the date?”
you thought about it for a second.
“yeah, what time?”
“3:00?”
“okay, see you.”
“see you ;)”
you smiled at the winky face as you shook your head. you guess it’s true, jake really does get what he wants.
