Tonight I saw a preview screening of Get Out, written and directed by the hilarious Jordan Peele, at Village Cinemas’ Jam Factory. The film was full of tense situations, although, woven through that was some great comedy writing. There were also a dozen or so little references, metaphors and symbols of America’s history with racism, which I can’t go too much into without spoilers. But as I watched on I knew that this would hit an American audience a lot harder than others, purely for those minor details in the film, and the attention paid to them. What I liked about this particular brand of thriller-horror was that I couldn’t predict the ending nor where the story was going. Though I was completely satisfied that every end was tied together in a neat package. It was reminiscent of the film The Skeleton Key (2005), though where that film was dealing with “magic and voodoo”, Get Out was dealing with discrimination that has been boiled down to a science. Kind of what Gattaca was suggesting… but specifically to racism against people of colour. The highlight of the film was 110% Daniel Kaluuya. He had strong chemistry with the cast, and his eyes say so much without speaking. He stole every moment, making him a protagonist that we actually care about. Not just a surrogate for the audience to experience the world of the film. Allison Williams was a great contributor to the chaos and tension that trickled through the film. My favourite scene of hers was towards the end, where she ate Froot Loops in the most non conventional way I’ve ever seen. It reminded me of every time I’ve seen a grown man drink a glass of milk on screen, it’s not a comforting sight. I totally recommend everyone seeing this thought provoking film, it comes out in Australia next week, after some advanced screenings this weekend. Rating: 4.5 Gets
