STAR TREK - Art by James Bama
James Bama's original cover painting for the Bantam Books edition of Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, the first in Bantam's paperback reprints of Doc's pulp novels.
Bama painted realistic copper-colored hair for Doc, complete with the widow's peak Doc was described as having in the stories.
However, Len Leone, the art director at Bantam (and a big Doc fan), wanted the hero to have a weird, unusual look that immediately informed the reader that this was no ordinary man. He instructed Bama to redo the hair, which is how we ended up with the "hair helmet" that has become Doc's trademark look since.
