Gone Home’s ending and the power of small stories
James Batchelor interviewed Steve Gaynor for a nice retrospective on Gone Home. Gaynor said something that really resonated with me:
"If you just wrote out the plot of Gone Home it would be a very simple story, but what we wanted to do was say everyone has a story that's incredibly important to them," [Gaynor] says. "And the reason it's important isn't because it's world-ending and unbelievably dramatic, it's because it happened to them and to people that they care about."
The ending of Gone Home deeply affects me to this day precisely because it is so focused and personal. The game's scope is so small, so human and so empathetic that it lands harder than any of the dozen times I've saved the galaxy.

EA CEO's damage control speech: “We want to be better”
James Batchelor, reporting for GamesIndustry.biz:
Before the in-depth preview of Anthem, CEO Andrew Wilson attempted to revive some goodwill for the publisher by assuring players that Electronic Arts is doing its best to move past the recent fiasco.
"We are always trying to learn and listen, and strive to be better," he said. "As you look at the ten experiences today, and as you play our games, there's some things we hope come through.
"First, that at the very core is choice. That you as players get to choose how you play, what you play, when you play and what devices you play on. That in making those choices you feel you are treated fairly, that no one is given an unfair advantage or disadvantage for how they choose to play.
This is quite a turnaround. Just seven months ago EA was releasing games where reviewers said you could "literally pay money for statistical advantages" and had "rampant and predatory monetization."

Why Double Fine’s Tim Schafer pushes for diversity
James Batchelor interviewed Tim Schafer for GamesIndustry.biz and asked him about his public calls for more diversity in gaming.
"I think [old white guys are] exactly who need to talk about it. There's a bunch of work to do to make things more diverse, and you can't put that shoulder on the group that's been marginalised and not represented. It's exactly the people who have been privileged and fortunate that have to do the work of saying, 'Hey, we need to do better'. Because it's wrong not to."
That last sentence is exactly right. In a society built on inequality, "business as usual" is immoral. It's wrong not to act.
