He pulls on his blazer, checks himself out quickly in the bathroom mirror, hurries to grab his lunchbox.
"Call it an interest that's — you know — experimental. How much do I change, in front of the white board? Only you can say," he concludes, sing-song.

KIERAN TAKES MADDIE INTO THE CITY TO BUY SOME FLOWERS THAT DON'T GROW NATURALLY OUT NEAR THE GLASS COMPOUND. The small-town girl is simultaneously overwhelmed and intrigued by the big city; she ends up wandering off to explore on her own.
She's peering into a bakery's display case, now, taking too long to decide between different types of stuffed croissants. She looks up and locks eyes with James—the first stranger (un)fortunate enough to meet her gaze.
"Now, we bake breads, and all, but all this, it's real impressive. What do you think I should get?"

"I'm not that kind of lawyer," she explains, patient but tired, strung out but still kind. She doesn't know how to be anything else, when it comes to men she feels the—sickening! Nauseating! Society-compelled-her-to!—urge to impress a nice-enough, successful-enough man. Their relationship—friendship!—is still so new that she can't shake the habit.
"But I'd be willing to help, in any way that I can. Just as a friend."

"It's not like I'm dealing with children all day," he reasons, leaning over their beers as if engaged with James in a conspiracy. He's unreasonably paranoid about being overheard by some other patrons who know him from the university and will tattle—hence him him and James occupying a corner booth in the dingy dive bar. His adjunct position feels tenuous at best compared to his tenured coworkers.
"Some of them are actually very perceptive. I was thinking about hiring a research assistant, actually, from someone in my eight a.m. — god. You're bored out of your mind. Sorry—I never get to think about anything but work, these days."
