Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025, USA)

Mini-review:

It's finally time for another Benoit Blanc mystery, and it did not disappoint. This is a whodunit that continues to challenge the viewer until the very end, adding more and more layers to the puzzle when you think it's about to be solved. I could sort of tell who the killer was from the beginning, based on my instinct for these things, but I could not for the world figure out how or why they did it. All of this mystery is used to comment on the tricky topic that is religion and faith in current times, and I honestly appreciated the conclusions that Rian Johnson comes to in his script. With a cast like that you also know you're getting an acting showcase. Besides Daniel Craig, who clearly has the time of his life playing this role, Josh O'Connor and Glenn Close are the obvious standouts. (There was one performance I did not like at all; I won't give names, but I expected it from the moment that casting choice was announced). To sum up, Wake Up Dead Man makes this Benoit Blanc series a three-for-three situation, and I really really hope this is not the end.
