Bridget Jones's Diary is an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in the loosest possible sense... but if there's one thing that the films, at least, capture incredibly well, it's how handsome and charming the Wickham character is...
It's often forgotten that, according to the novel, Wickham is meant to be even better looking than Darcy. Plus, when he enters the Phillipses' party and sits next to Elizabeth and then spends a good chunk of the evening talking to her everyone in the room is jealous!!! I haven't seen a P&P adaptation (apart from Death Comes to Pemberley) that has ever captured that as well as Hugh Grant does as Daniel Cleaver in Bridget Jones.
He's so charming that you as the audience are equally as taken in by him as Bridget is, and no matter how many times I've seen it, I still feel so disappointed when he turns out to be a total scumbag. He seems like the complete package and the perfect antidote to the haughty Darcy character, but obviously first impressions can be misleading and it does turn out that a man who was incredibly insulting to you during your first meeting can actually be the right person for you!!
