James and Bridget Gillespie, Christmas 1909

If I believed in anything That I can call a home I would’ve been by your side But every time I try To put my feet on solid ground I go and burn it right down
When you’ve been brought up by fire, the rain can last forever
I’ve seen too much too young to know that there’s salt in every weather
I don't know how to speak So many versions of me I've taken the foolish and buried the blind Ask for the truth, been pushed back in life And I can't stand still
Maybe I'm broken and maybe I'm wrong Men, we don't cry about it anymore Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm torn
I can't see beyond today I can't see beyond today Tell me there's something beyond today I need to believe
I tried to give back or give up And I'm losing forgiveness for what I've done So act like you're weary, act like you're tough Put up your walls and just pretend it's enough But you can't stand still
Maybe I'm broken and maybe I'm wrong Men, we don't cry about it anymore Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm torn
I can't see beyond today I can't see beyond today Tell me there's something beyond today I need to believe, beyond today, yeah
And if the Devil was to hold me down To leave without my blackened soul And I won't be holding on And nobody will hold me down We're damaged just for the lost you said And you told me, you told me you lied Oh, I need to know if tomorrow comes, will you lie?
'Cause I can't see beyond today I can't see beyond today Tell me there's something beyond today Yeah, I need to believe, beyond today And tell me there's something beyond today That I need, beyond today To believe To believe

I can’t really think beyond today, or even beyond this moment while listening to the latest from James Gillespie. We’re no strangers to the English born, Scottish-raised singer songwriter and his gravelly stirring cooing. But here we are again, reeling from the sheer strength of his new hymnal Beyond Today. It’s more of Gillespie’s masterful songwriting, an electro-tinged, rootsy and folksy anthem that echoes the potency and raw gripping allure of artists like Dermot Kennedy and Tom Walker. On the heels of last critically acclaimed release Him.Her, Gillespie continues to exhibit his sheer versatility and heartfelt delivery. Beyond Today is a striking confessional, a searing account of vulnerability. Speaking on the track, James states: "Sometimes when life is at its darkest it's hard to know who you are. Who to turn to when you need someone. The darker the times the darker I become. It’s hard to see what's right or wrong when there is no light in sight. And it becomes impossible to see beyond today." James Gillespie co-produces all of his own music, and he’s currently working with Charlie Andrew (Alt-J) and Andy Hall Hall (Rag’n’Bone Man). He even sold out his debut headline show in London recently. I have no doubt that it won’t be long before he’ll be doing so in countless other cities. Stream/download Beyond Today, here.
Try to hold and say She can lead my hands My body is shaking My bones are breaking I should talk to her and say You know what you're doing to me
