WSBK - Phillip Island 2014
Hurray! A welcome return to bikey motorsport and more importantly, the return of our favourite silver-haired, chino-wearing TV presenter.
Our badly taken photo (alas, no more BBC iPlayer to take screenshots from) does not do justice to the cornflower tones of these grey-blue slacks. Between that and the dark-coloured shirt, it was all looking a bit disappointingly muted and subdued for Matt's first foray into WSBK coverage. I mean, we know that Matt is the new boy and keen to blend in - but with those blue-grey shades he quite literally was blending in with the studio backdrop.
However MRWSC is not a casual viewer when it comes to fashion, oh no. Your normal viewer (and we are definitely not normal, I think that much has been established) might have missed what was happening on Matt's left shirt cuff, but we did not. These things do not go un-noticed at MRWSC HQ, and we clocked that dainty gold pattern right away - although try as we might to squint at it and press our faces up against the TV (again, NOT normal) we could not identify said pattern.
Why only a pattern on one cuff? 'Tis obvious! The BBC viewership was of course well-acquainted with Matt's predilection towards pastels and patterns, but to the Eurosport audience this may be much too much to take in all at once, especially at the very first race. It's quite clear that our savvy host is breaking them all in gently and not going all-out with the revolutionary clothing choices too soon. We expect Matt's style to quickly spread across the rest of his outfit for next time. We'd quite like to see a floral pattern, or perhaps some coral tones for Spring.
We must give a special mention to James Haydon, who was clearly trying to glam things up a bit in this natty black velvet jacket. We appreciate his efforts but just you watch, Haydon. Roberts will break out the big fashion guns soon, we just know it.
