Bluefanguy’s Book Thoughts
Love Drugged by James Klise
Good day all and welcome to another edition of Bluefanguy’s Book Thoughts! Today’s book is Love Drugged by James Klise.
Jamie Bates has dreams about guys and he want nothing more than to feel like a normal guy, including going out with classmate Celia Gamez. When a chat room leads to a classmate realizing he’s gay, Jamie freaks out and is desperate for a change. After being introduced to Celia’s father, a pharmaceutical developer, he’s informed of an experimental drug that would supposedly allow homosexual attraction to be nullified. He takes the opportunity before him and though he believes its working, there are side effects and Jamie can only keep them secret for so long.
I can say that the idea of a drug that can suppress homosexual attraction is absolutely terrifying to me. Still, I did enjoy this book. Jamie’s fear and frustration lead to rather questionable actions and he has to wonder if he’s doing right by himself lying not only to himself but those around him in an attempt to seek some radical notion of normalcy. As he learns though, changing onself in such a manner can have rather extreme consequences. That aside, the idea of something that can alter sexual attraction seems to be the real unnatural thought. If someone were to create such a drug, I’d do what I could to fight against it’s spread since, as mentioned in the book, such prevalence of the drug would be analogous to the ex-gay “therapy” that thankfully is now considered illegal.
If you love books with gay characters, questions of identity, and the concept of alteration drugs, then you just may love this book.
Thanks for reading! Likes, reblogs, comments, questions, and followings are all appreciated. Until next time.
Bluefanguy, out.
