Introducing James Ritter

"I believe in you," his client said over the phone, shouting over the noise in the common room of the jail. "I've talked to other people about you, and they say you're a fighter." James sighed, gripping the phone a little bit tighter. Other clients had told him that before, but he didn't believe them. The client had asked for an impossible outcome, and this late in the afternoon James didn't have the heart to tell him that he didn't think he could convince the prosecutor for home detention. His client had picked up a new case, and the court never looked kindly on multiple felonies. "It's just that, since I've been in here, I've found God," his client said. "And now I'm clean. And I've got a clear mind. And I've talked to my wife, and I'm just so glad that I got caught before I killed myself. And I know you can do this for me, Mr. Ritter." "We're certainly going to try," Ritter said. "I've had you screened for community corrections, and hopefully they'll recommend home detention again. And I've e-mailed the prosecutor, so I should have an offer for you by the end of the week." "I got myself an up-and-coming lawyer," his client said, "so I trust you. I think we're going to get it all done next week." "We will," Ritter said, trying as hard as he could to believe even half as much as his client. "We'll get it done and we'll get you home, one way or another."
