MTA Arts & Design welcomed public transportation professionals from throughout the country with a look at monumental art in the subway system!  Attendees of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) annual conference were guided through lower Manhattan to learn about the process of creating Ann Hamilton’s CHORUS (2018) at the WTC Cortlandt Street (1) station, the “Sky Reflector Net” by James Carpenter at Fulton Center, and Arts & Design’s award-winning Digital Arts Program. Uptown, another group toured the iconic artworks installed for the Second Avenue Subway (Q) Station to see firsthand the expansive permanent public art installation and its impact.

A year ago today, we celebrated the opening of the new Fulton Center in lower Manhattan featuring Sky Reflector-Net, a monumental sculpture by James Carpenter Design Associates, Grimshaw Architects​, and Arup​. Sky Reflector-Net acts as a primary defining element for the Fulton Center – combining beauty and function in distributing changing daylight and bringing the sky down into the lower levels of the Center creating a renewed sense of place for Lowe rManhattan. It’s the largest work in our collection and one of the most photographed!
