Patricia Bath (November 4, 1942 – May 30, 2019) was an American ophthalmologist, inventor, and humanitarian, known for her groundbreaking contributions to eye surgery and medicine. She became the first African American woman doctor to receive a medical patent, which was for her invention of the Laserphaco Probe in 1986. This device revolutionized cataract surgery by using laser technology to remove cataracts with greater precision and less risk.

Hello everyone, a quick update on my eye. I go in on Thursday for surgery.

They are doing what's called plaque therapy. It is a small plate with radioactive seeds attached to it. It will be sewn to my eye. I will wear it for four days and it will be removed. If you are squeamish at all. Please don't google it. It looks worse than will actually be. If all goes as planned this will be a one shot surgery and the radiation will break up the tumor. In 2001, my company @enter360media was the largest #virtualreality producer in the world. We had our own rendering software and were producing content worldwide. It was delivered online and also on CD-ROM, on kiosks and we served many different markets. Our main focus at the time was hospitality, and when terrorist took out the trade centres in New York, we were forced to diversify to survive. This is one project that we had some press on for a local eye laser clinic. We used VR and AR to turn it into a HUGE success. The goal was to use tech and VR to relieve some of the fears people had, for data-mining prospects and ultimately close sales. Prospects could take a virtual tour of the office and click to walk through doors, then click on equipment and get information on what each did. This showed the process from pre-exam to post op. We also created a data mine, by producing an 11 minute video of the entire surgical procedure from start to finish, but in order to view it, people had to fill out the form and join the mailing list. At the end of the video, viewers had the opportunity to schedule a free consultation. Over 50% of people who watched the video scheduled a consult. The clinic closed 65% of people who came in for a consult. The surgery was $5000+ at the time, and we made this client MILLIONS. Strategy and execution, combined with technology. This was 20 years ago! I have a lot more experience now and technology has come a LONG way, but there are certain ideas I had back then, that have still not been realized. I was a venture capitalist beginning in 2004, and sat on the board for a research and development consortium that used to develop tech, and invested in some. I also developed some tech using the lab’s services. Iris implant surgery was first developed and used in 1996 by a German doctor, and was originally used to correct eye diseases. Its popularity has recently spiked due to its aesthetic use, despite being banned in both Canada and the United States.

Bright Ocular has been at the forefront of this movement, providing ‘flexible, biocompatible, colored medical grade silicone to change the eye colour permanently.’. Nowhere on the website does it mention the risks associated with an iris implant.

Iris implants remain banned in Canada and the United States due to the damage associated. The main issue comes from the implant sitting directly on the iris, this causes rubbing that can deform and damage the pupil. A damaged pupil can lead to blindness and light sensitivity if untreated. If the implant remains on the iris too long it can also cause glaucoma and cataracts.

Even with these deadly side effects this surgery is still available in foreign countries. Proving that some people will do anything to achieve society’s beauty standard.
